so as i am accused of being mathematically challenged maybe some one can help me out here.

I and my wife, 3 children and the MOTH.... excuse me..... mother-in-law. Five people.

in my opinion:

i and my wife = 2 persons

3 children = 3 persons

1 mil = 1 person

GRAND TOTAL: =6 persons

if my math is incorrect kindly let me know how to rectify the problem. i myself am puzzled and will go borrow the neighbors calculator

1. Electric: 1,300 a month with a/c on sometimes

2. Good Oranges: 35 per kilo

3. Monthly water bill: 300 baht per month. Am I being ripped off?

4. "Hi Speed" Internet: 800 baht per month

5. Fried rice + chicken or pork from a stall restaurant: 25 baht

6. Nom Took Moo (the best dish in all of Thailand): 35-40 baht

7. Papaya salad (somtam): 20-25 baht.

That or my condominium is robbing me. I live alone (ok, some girls take a shower sometimes too ) and pay 300 baht/month for water. That is anyway incredibly cheap compared to what I used to pay in Italy (and I did not take 3 showers a day there )

I envy you. Here in Pattaya I can find oranges only at Carrefour and price ranges between 39 and 80 baht. And sometimes they can hardly be called "good". Unless you are speaking of tangerines and I of Navel oranges....that would explain everything.

Yeah that's entirely possible. I've never really learned to differentiate between the many varieties of oranges and tangerines. Although it isn't as easy to find them at the moment because it's not really the season for them now.

Rent here is cheap. I pay 12000 per month, (1 bedroom apartment in central phuket)

Fuel is the same price as Australia, so not a lot of diference there

Car hire here is cheap

Electricity here is expensive using Aircon every night (6 Baht/Unit)

Cigarettes are cheap 60 Baht a pack. ($10.00 in Australia (270 Baht))

Beer is about the same parice as Oz.

Food is cheap.

Average price for a snack, or cooked food at the markets is 20-40 baht a serve

McDonalds is about the same price as Oz.

Building costs are cheap

A maid for washing/Ironong/cleaning is very cheap.

Taxi's and Tuk Tuks are expensive here compared to Bangkok, but still a lot cheaper than Australia.

Going out to a restaraunt is cheap.

Value for money, Thailand is a great place.

hmmm total just under 30K...forgetting stuff..usually around 32,33K per month in reality very comfy life

Rent in BKK is the killer. You're paying as much/more than some people back in the states pay to rent a decent 3 bedroom home in a decent area.

I'm paying 6K a month for a 4 bedroom, 3 bath place. Not sure what the size is but it's plenty big.

Never figured why anyone would want to live in BKK (unless situation forces it). Easy and cheap to just fly there for a week or so when the spirit moves you.

It IS cheap to live a quality life in Thailand. Just not in the tourist areas.

Partly out of laziness and because I have not tracked my spending closely for a while (something i used to do) I will second this members list, it appears very close to my actual costs now, with the exception of travel and beer, i am right where i want to be so spend very little to get around town, can walk almost everywhere. So i would amend that to less than 1000 and make "beer" "entertainment" then that i would have to bump up to 10k or so

But above does not include travel (maybe a bit in Thailand) and most importantly: socializing/drinking/partying which easily adds 20k to the total per mth.

This is not a mistake the costs are monthly conservative and I've missed loads out yes you will be able to guess that I live in bloody London!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully this will cheer up anyone living in Thailand and missing the UK / OZ etc or feeling their living expenses are starting to creep up. Trust me you are better off where you are whatever you may feel about current political unrest / insurgents etc etc.

rent is indeed the killer, Mr Blues. so what are your overall expenses anyhow? I pay this enormous premium, no doubt, but I am where i want to be and as I explained, my transportation costs are near zero, thus can credit my rent to whatever that amount were to come to if I had a car or whatever
