General Apirat Kongsompong

The Army will send a force to the border to prevent foreign workers illegally entering the country and triggering a second wave of Covid-19, Army deputy spokeswoman Colonel Sirichan Ngathong announced on Friday.

The move comes after Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed concern over a surge of Covid-19 cases in neighbouring countries and said the Army had an important duty to support the government in containing the virus, said Sirichan, speaking after an urgent meeting presided over by Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong.

"Since the Army has a responsibility to protect natural borders across the country, the Army chief instructed military officers from area commands and Special Warfare Command to establish a special force to closely monitor border areas," she said.

She added that the prime minister had also emphasised that Thailand was still at risk despite having effectively contained the spread of Covid-19.

Well, that's refreshing to see, they DO realize the army is not just there to perpetrate coups and protect the rich elite!

Sounds like they have condemned any entry for workers then unless they jump through the hoops to come. No open borders anytime soon.

Should be a nice change for those whose normal chores include:

Mowing the lawn,  weeding the garden,  washing the Generals wifes car and driving her around, waitering for the family at meal time.   Having a real gun and some ammo is enough to bring on a real stiffy, ay!

time to deploy the subs!

...and to ensure that only those who have paid the correct bribes....will be allowed to illegally cross the border.

Another solution would be to make the criteria/documentation to enter the country easily obtainable and affordable, then migrants would enter through natural borders, get tested and go into quarantine.

No need to worry about illegals.

With due respect, which border?? The one with Burma (illegal Burmese and Chinese), the one with Laos (illegal Laotians and Chinese), the one with Cambodia (illegal Khmers) or the complete border?? I believe Malaysia has closed its border with Thailand. Potentially a lot of "soldier power"!

From stories I've heard, Burma is one of them. Thai's going to work in the Myanmar casino's (post lockdown), who must be crossing the border illegally given they're closed, which means they cannot return through official channels on the way back.

Second hand info but yesterday heard there were a number of infected illegal migrants from Myanmar in a Mae Rim hospital.

Orders to shoot on sight

one of the reasons I'm not letting complacency get atop of my mask wearing..
