Tourism chief appeals for patience, but admits things will “never be the same”

A poet! Yuthasak. A philosopher. Who would have thought? Patience. Easy for an administration official, who is collecting a full salary and pension to say. Very easy. And as we can see, this is coming from a guy, who prior to be appointed to his current position, had no experience in tourism, as is normal here, in this polar opposite of a meritocracy.

Things will be tougher moving forward as with every country. However, doesn't mean it's all bad news as when one door closes another one opens, hence there will be positives for those that use their initiative and think outside the box.  Many businesses will undoubtedly shut down but new opportunities will come to those who explore new ways and products.

With our PM Khun Prayut Chan O Cha in charge I am sure he will continue to get things going again as his priority is the thai people, the economy and jobs.

All of the above didn't cost one single satang. Good job.

I remember when the foreign correspondents club spoke with immigration about the TM30. One person asked why they should have to take a half-day off work on a Monday to report that they were in Pattaya for the weekend, and the immigration officer curtly said, “don’t travel, then” like he was being smart, and how dare you question really bad and stupid ideas.

Well, som nam na. Maybe next time the people who work in and profit from tourism wanna speak up more and protect their customers from government agencies who wanna be petulant and childish because they haven’t matured to a basic adult level.

TAT and immigration: “if it ain’t broke, then break it”.

Sincerely delusional is as much as I can say. To believe that everything will be ok well then someone must be in the Cha Cha's back pocket.

I do beg to differ. If anything, it might not be intended. I remember some purchase announced but  "delayed" because of the public outcry.

Do they take into their dreams the fact that the covid economic outfall erades the targeted indian and chinese middle class?

At least they've eliminated the fourth D - dysentery.

His mantra must be a speech a day to keep the tourist away. Rich tourists don't spend money in local shops or help the small businesses. Pattaya has boarded up 50% of its shops and restaurants already and many of its hotels are closed. The situation is getting worse by the day the D stands for Disaster.

Why is it that all those people in high places find themselves compelled to predict the future and talk rubbish? the Covid didn't change people's preferences as to where to travel, it only stopped it for a while, once a prepare vaccine will be found things will go back to normal, now, when is this going to happen? that question no one can answer not even the biggest and the most revered doctors and professors of the world...

I don't think it will ever get back to the old normal again. Too many people across the world lost their jobs and are up to maxing out their CC, overdrafts and are worrying about their homes being repossesed to care about holidays anyway.

Air fares will rise and if they make the effort to get to Thailand they will end up in a ASQ for 2 weeks and probably another 2 weeks in their home countries.

It is true that not everyone was affected but India has the second highest covid infections after the USA. True that China may let people come to Thailand, but they were the source of covid. If and when tourists there may be no hotels for them to stay at and few if any people to service the hotels.

i think he is right, westerners will over time decrease,

and newcomers will come, think russians a decade ago,

and now chinese/indians.

I imagine with 100,000 new infections and 1000 deaths a day, India might not be at the top of that list at the moment ! Immunizing a nation that size will take a decade !

International tourists will never come while there is a 14 day quarantine. Business people may, depending on the business need.

What is the point of making all these stupid forecasts when you don't know anything about when the quarantine will be lifted.

TAT, spend some of marketing budget on people who are already here (retirement, marriage, work etc). Personally I am bored sick, but I'll be damned if I'll be ripped off. Give a "real" discount on hotels to fill them up (remember the Spanish hoteliers that each winter slashed their prices such that you could stay a month for, at the time 150 quid. When I say a "real' discount it means a discount from the usual low/high season price....not some stupid nonsense where the hotelier ups the price by 60% and then discounts it by 50%.

The TAT chief is appealing to the Thai tourism industry to be “patient, united, and confident in weathering the current crisis”

How on earth can anyone have confidence in this lot of idiots running our country at the moment. They seriously have NO clue at all on what is going on right now, let alone have a clue on what the future will bring. Open up the country and do all you can to manage it properly. ASAP.

Oh yes I will be patient while I watch the successful business I built over a decade decline and collapse. Oh yes I will be patient as my sibling is admitted to psychiatric care for depression. Oh yes I will be patient as my belongings are piled up in the soi because my landlady won't give me any leeway on my rent.

These people in government jobs need to wake up and smell the stench of decay that is enveloping whole swathes of the tourism industry.

Patience - much easier said than done in this unprecedented situation!

Maybe a business whose revenue is down 20% can wait it out patiently (while reducing cost), but many tourism related businesses have lost most of their revenue since half a year already (and counting). That's obviously unsustainable.

First things first...if you really want foreigners in the country to spend money..here's a tip. Offer free annual extensions to all current foreigners in country who have not left in the past 6 months and who have tested negative. Then provide them with an array of discounts for travel fare and accomodation, giving greater discounts the more your travel. Suspend 90 day reports and TM30 nonsense.

You could do it even easier ... Allow anyone in - Who would do the ASQ for 14 days - Then give them 1 year visa, no reporting etc .. Simple .. and discounts etc for all trips and hotel in the country.

Get in trouble with the law during your stay - kick them out.

When you have the 'world to pick from' ... They should be able to get a few takers ...
