Finally got the Server 2007 Enterprise Edition loaded under MS Virtual PC 2007, doesn't install with VMWare 5.5 - version 6.0 is supposed to support virtual Vista. Tried installing it using the .iso file as a virtual DVD drive and it would fail part way through the installation (3 attempts). Burned a DVD and voila, no problems installing. Using an core2duo EN6600 and 2GB ram install took about 20 minutes.

Starting the Server under the Virtual environment, about 60 seconds. Shutdown time about 3 seconds. Reserved 1GB memory for the Server and performance in a virtual environment was on par with XP. Installed on a hard disk, suspect it to be quite fast. NAT networking works fine.

Nice find Reimer, thanks.

A way around that is to mount the ISO using Daemon tools or alcohol, and then setup vmware to use whatever drive letter that is assigned using Deamon or Alcohol. Trying to use the build in provided by vmware fails on most OS'es including Tiger and Vista. I will try to install longhorn tonight using Vware 5.5, I run 6.0 only on Vista at the moment, and it's a relaese candidate.

May you'face the same problem as Tywais: can't install from mounted ISO!

I suggest that you use a DVD. But if you burn, use just 2x to burn because I was getting problems witth fast burned DVD's for Longhorn!

I installed Longhorn on a Laptop under Virtual PC 2007 from DVD and it works fine, as Web-Edition same as Enterprise!

By the way, Virtual PC 2007 is Freeware by MS can be downloaded!

It is installing as we speak, no problems inside vmware 5.5 using daemon tools to mount the ISO, it is almost finished installing :o

Vmware is know for problems when using their built in mounting tool, that's why I always use daemon or alcohol to mount iso files.

I'm installing the enterprise edition, I have virtual pc 2007 as well, but performance on vmware 5.5 is better, the new 6.0 is now without debugging, so runs fine as well, but I'm using XP as a host for now, and haven't upgrade to 6.0 on XP yet (waiting for the final release to do that, now it's RC).

I'm waiting for the install to finish, it's at 40% now, so I'll know soon enough.

The problem I had was it would complete the expansion 100% do the first auto-reboot then start the rest of the installation then fail part way through with the error 'dssenh.dll not designed to run under windows'. That was three attempts with VMWare and internally mounting. It also failed using the DVD. Tried mounting with PowerISO and no luck either. One problem is the DVD is in UDF format and makes things a little more difficult. Will try Alcohol now.

Hmm, well my install just finished, and I'm looking at the desktop and the initial configuration taks window.

No network though inside vmware, maybe time to install the vmware tools, almost there I guess.

Okay it's working (including network), boy what is the booting of longhorn fast, that's unbelievable. I will install Active Directory on it, that will slow it down I guess :o

I needed to install vmware tools to make networking available, that's different from Vista which worked out of the box.

Strange. I just mounted it with Alcohol and did the install and it failed again at the same point with the 'dssen.dll' not valid error. VMware 5.5. The error window says Setup.exe - Bad Image. It loaded under Virtual PC 2007 on two machines with no failure so wouldn't expect it to be a corrupt ISO. It's at the 'completing installation' point where it fails.

What vmware machine type did you install ? I used Vista experimental.

I thought that was only in the 6.0 candidate, but just looked at 5.5 and there it is Vista experimental. Will give it a try again, thanks for pointing that out - missed it.

Congratulations!

I think already to change some of my computers to the Longhorn Server because of its speed! Vista is a "turtle" against Longhorn! I don't need many of the Vista stuff on my working computers. All what I need is easily to install on Longhorn! And work as I tested on the Laptop!!

Until right now not any problems! I've active Directory running and it slows down just a very little!

This computer I writing now is running Longhorn Web-Edition and run online as Web-Server. Everything much faster as Vista!!

I haven't test the difference between Longhorn and Server 2003 but I think even here Longhorn is a bit faster!

Waiting for Info from online users about tthe connection and speed of this server! But not any info yet. And a problem is that some people can't read! Who signup to the Server didn't use the ThaiVisa Name or send the E-Mail!

Tywais:

Your account is open already!! Test it out please and let me know.

Thanks

Tywais:

just copy the ISO from Longhorn to your Directory on the server. Let me kown if you want it splitted in smaller files.

I'm doing the reinstall now mounting the iso with Alcohol but selecting the 'correct' virtual machine this time "Vista experimental" and see if it works. Personally I prefer VMWare and would like it to work with it. Thanks for informing me of the account status, didn't see an e-mail yet. Will try it at my office with a fast lan connection tomorrow.

Update: Using Vista Experimental virtual machine it fails exactly the same and the same spot with VMware 5.5.

Ok, just send you an PM!

By the way, on the Server Resume is enabled and you can use a Download Accelerator also!

Why you not signup to my server! It's a Longhorn Server Web-Edition running online! Signup and I open direct the account (if you signup within the next 30 min!).

Would be also interest for me to get info from you about the connection and speed!

Thanks and Cheers

Done so just a minute ago.

By the way that server manager really rocks, great additional tool. Central administration indeed !

THE SERVER MANAGER IS GREAT!! BUT THE OTHER FUNCTIONS AS WELL. COMPARE TO SERVER 2003 A BIG STEP FORWARD!

I'm now typing this from Firefox running under Longhorn Enterprise Edition on my office machine AMD 3800X2 and 2GB memory inside VMware 5.5. Obviously the networking is working fine. This time I used Daemon tools to mount it rather then Alcohol and no problems at all. Will do the same tonight on the home computer to see if I get the same success. Performance is quite good even running in a virtual environment.

For Reimer: Connected to your server with no problem and did a test download. Average speed was 500kbps.

Thanks for that info!

I've a download from 2,560 and upload from 512 kbps, so 500 is nearly the absolute max! That's really good!

That's good that Longhorn now works on one of your machines! Hopfully the Home comp will works as well too!

The speed on the Laptop with Virtual PC is just 1/3 of the speed from the Desktop/Server! May I'll try VM as well on the laptop!
