Bill Murray: His 20 greatest films ranked, from Caddyshack to Lost in Translation

By Ed Power

From 'Ghostbusters' to 'Fantastic Mr Fox', Murray has remained one of cinema's most beloved presences for decades (The Independent )

Whether playing a ghostbuster, a singing bear or a heartbroken middle-aged man, bereft and adrift in an uncaring world, there is a Bill Murray for every season.

The actor happens, of course, to be one of the great screen comedians of the past 50 years.

But it’s the pathos stirred in with the hilarity that has made him such an enduring presence.

As he turns 70 today, here is the definitive ranking of his best movie performances (Garfield fans should brace for the possibility that it hasn’t made the cut).

Hmmm left off Razor's Edge (first attempt at "serious" role)

I might move a few up or down, but he sure has had some body of work

Thing about rankings is that it is as much a reflection of ranker as it is of film, music, whatever

I have never seen a bad movie featuring Bill Murray.

From the list 1, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 16 are great.

So quite happy to discover some which I didn't see yet (including two more Wes Anderson movies).

1. Lost in Translation (2003)

2. Ghostbusters (1984)

3. Rushmore (1998)

4. Groundhog Day (1993)

5. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

6. Broken Flowers (2005)

7. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

8. Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)

9. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

10. Charlie’s Angels (2000)
