Germany tells Britain to "stop the games", time running out for deal

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Germany's Europe Minister Michael Roth urged Britain on Tuesday to drop plans for a bill that would break the country's obligations to the European Union under its withdrawal treaty as time was running out to clinch an EU-Britain trade deal.

 

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of EU ministers in Brussels that is to prepare a summit of EU leaders later this week, Roth said he was "extremely worried" by London's plans to pass an internal market bill that would break international law.

 

"Please, dear friends in London, stop the games, time is running out, what we really need is a fair basis for further negotiations and we are ready for that," Roth said.

 

The bill is expected to pass through the lower chamber of parliament next week and has thrown talks on a trade agreement between Britain and the EU into chaos as it undermines Britain's willingness to honour international deals.

 

"The so-called internal market bill extremely worries us because it violates the guiding principles of the withdrawal agreement. And that is totally unacceptable for us," Roth said.

 

He said the EU was "really, really disappointed" about the results of the trade negotiations, which have become stuck on the issue of EU fishermen's access to British waters, fair competition between EU and British companies and a mechanism to resolve disputes in the future.

 

Roth said EU ministers on Tuesday would state their strong support for the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier and his team and re-affirm a strong commitment to a fair trade deal based on trust and confidence.

I've had the same opinion for 40 odd years, so it won't be changing. Boris is knocking them in the aisles, all challengers including the challengers like Merkel and Macron. Watch them all squirming everyday now.

This article suggests that it might be a 'bad thing' to not 'get a deal'.

 

The UK doesn't need a deal, it will make its own future without EU interference and invoices.

Indeed it is. After long and protracted negotiations the UK has opted for the nuclear option.

As a last throw of the dice Johnson decided to put peace and stability of Northern Ireland into the pot but it looks like the EU is just going to call.

It's a Reuters article, so always anti-Brexit. Isn't it funny how frequently TVF manages to find these?  If the EU were to be sensible, a deal might not be a bad idea, but given their antics over the past four years or more and various tricks to try and force UK into a bad deal, No Deal is best for the UK.

 

It's only 100 days countdown to end of the transition period. They actually have less than that to end their EU nonsense by Boris's ultimatum of 31st October. That's why they are now panicking.

Head of EU exit at the port says money needs to be ‘issued rather than talked about’

Dover port is not Brexit ready because it is still waiting for government funds to be released for vital infrastructure for the new border operations, it has been revealed.

It comes as it emerged that the government was considering forcing drivers to obtain a special Brexit passport before entering Kent in a bid to avert queuing chaos in January.

Tim Reardon, the head of EU exit at the port, said the government was “cutting it quite tight” with just 100 days to go before Brexit is implemented on 1 January.

Opa??? You are talking to a person that is a little bit younger than that. Still the UK is only one little set of England, Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland. Already have problem with that little family where some are filing for divorce. In other words, it´s easy to understand why they can´t function in a bigger group.

I would offer that EU is indeed shaking because of one country exit.  It is simply economics.  How will the other few wealthy nations make up the billions no longer being paid by UK to be part of the country club?

 

Also, there would be a great number of nations speaking german today if not for "America."

I don’t know what’s more amusing. That you seem to believe your own conspiracy theories, yet are still here, or that until today you haven’t noticed that TVF sources all its international news from Reuters apparently. I reckon it’s because it’s the cheapest wire service or something like that. Maybe the easiest for TVF to rip, or the one that aligns closest to the forum owners sentiment. 

If you have to rely on MSM to support your views you’re in a sorry state. I’ll rely on the real stuff like referenda and election results.

Yes, and everything you UK is getting more expensive. One country lose many other, or many other lose one country. Easy to see where the hurt is going to be.

However, What taxes= I live in Thailand since over 20 years back in time. How do you figure my taxes will increase?

 

Last but not least. Even if the pound is still worth a quid in your little world that is shrinking everytime Boris take a breath, why would I want to but a currency that has lost about 50% of it´s value?

The EU, albeit in a German controlled fascist form, would have come into existence approximately 80 years ago were it not for America's intervention; and Britain standing alone against the subjugation and control of Europe by one nation.

I'm German but rooting for the U.K. in this game.  Is that O.K.?  The match has already been won so it's perfectly good strategy to let the clock wind down.
