Protesters scuffle with police at London anti-lockdown demo

Protesters scuffle with police at London anti-lockdown demo

Thousands of protesters gathered in Trafalgar Square in central London on Saturday (September 26) to protest against the British government's recently toughened COVID-19 restrictions.

LONDON (Reuters) - Protesters at a central London anti-lockdown rally scuffled with police officers on Saturday who were trying to break up the demonstration because of a lack of social distancing.

Police said nine officers had been injured and 16 people arrested for offences including assaulting an officer and violent disorder, in the second weekend of trouble at a demonstration against pandemic restrictions.

Chanting "Freedom" and carrying banners saying "We Do Not Consent" and "COVID 1984", thousands of people had crammed into Trafalgar Square to protest. Several told broadcasters they believed the pandemic was a hoax created by governments to control people.

The police ordered the protest to disperse because demonstrators had failed to socially distance or wear masks, meaning it was no longer exempt from national rules that limit gatherings to six people.

Video footage showed officers briefly using batons to drive the protesters back.

"I am very frustrated to see that nine officers were injured during clashes with a small minority of protesters," said Commander Ade Adelekan.

"This is especially saddening in light of the injuries sustained by officers last weekend. We will be supporting those officers who were injured and I wish them a very speedy recovery."

Saturday's demonstration followed a similar event last weekend when 32 people were arrested.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tightened COVID-19 restrictions this week, telling people to work from home if possible and ordering pubs and restaurants to close early after cases started to rise again.

The United Kingdom recorded 6,042 new cases of COVID-19, official figures showed on Saturday, and 34 new deaths among those who tested positive for the virus within 28 days.

The cracks are appearing in a number of countries now. Folks have, quite simply had enough of this now.

I've been of the opinion from the very early days that we should, once sensible precautions have been put in place to protect the vulnerable, let this disease run its course.

Mankind survived the flu pandemic of 1917/18 and collectively, our immune systems were probably the stronger for it. It's time to 'bite the bullet'.

And a lot more arrests coming. Draconian measures to say the least, hardly surprising there is strong resistance.

I am one of the vulnerable ones, so please don't try and throw that one back at me.

Should it be let to follow its course with stats like these?

Total cases - 32.6M

Recovered - 22.5M
Deaths - 990K

It would be ridiculous to suggest that those numbers can be projected in a straight line into the future.  That would represent the ultimate simplistic model.  As with climate change, too many working parts in play.  To assume you've accounted for them all would be utter folly and hubris.  An obvious lack of faith in mankind and his potentials on display, let alone understanding.

These are not people willing to  follow basic simple precautions.

If people had kept their  distance, limited their gathering in large crowded  groups, not forced infected people to  go to work, not continued to circulate when infected etc. much of the spread could have been halted. There is a reason why some countries are having explosions in the  number of infections: Some people are selfish jerks.

Correct. with a little knowledge of trends and maths, its clear that these figures would ramp up exponentially, as the did before restrictions were put into place and as they are now in the US. And he wants 4 more years? You're avin' a giraffe.

ravip is not suggesting disaster with his statement, supported by the numbers he provided which he's obviously using to project outward in an unchanging manner?  You're simply attempting refutation via the tactic of using a technicality.  Lame.

Follow simple, basic precautions?  Is that all?  So simple?  Why don't you mention the pain, suffering and death resulting from your basic precautions?  Businesses lost, loss of income and savings, unemployment, economic devastation, rise in suicides, depression, etc.

Is it you who selfishly ignores the negative consequences from your simple, basic precautions?

You've been drinking too much orange Koolade. The deaths you are quoting pale into insignificance when compared to the deaths from Covid.

The ‘technicality’ is the fact that nobody in this discussion has made the projection you have asserted.

I did. The real projection is that deaths would increase exponentially not linearly.

ive read and seen reports on the demo, why do police act in this way against the demo?they allowed BLM demos that vandalised many war memorials etc and the police bowed before this!it was very insulting to most people.the actions of the police and people at demo that is,we now see 100% different approach from authorities,is it perhaps that authorities see their right to rule being questioned?that would seem quite obvious to most.give it a little thought, the law is supposed to be for all of course in UK theres always a few exceptions ,think tony blair!we are supposed to live in a democracy it appears we no longer do.as de montseque said i may be opposed to what you say but i will lay down my life for your right to say it,the epitome of the democractic ideal and i feel this demo should have been respected,i feel pertinent points were made some absurd too but its the right of an individual and free thinking society not to oppress its own people right to self expression especially in such a duplicious hypocritical and self seeking manner

The same trends and maths used early to predict Covid mortality rates which were astronomically wrong?  Statistics and maths alone are capable of accurately predicting human activity?  My opinion is that you're avin' a fantasy.

My worry is that corona could mutate into an even more serious illness. We know IF it gets into your lungs you can be in a world of hurt.

So lets all try and keep a lid on it till a vaccine comes along. Then we can all go back to "normal".

I am aware that there is also a possibility that the virus could mutate into a far less dangerous strain. That would be fantastic.

But people need to take precautions like wearing a mask. No-one seems to have an issue conforming to security checks before you get on an airplane. Why? Because we are all aware its for our own safety.

Think of the precautions for corona in the same light.

Indeed. The medical profession also don't know all the affects of having this virus on your organs. Some people have had it and suffered one organ, others multiple organ issues.

Much much more research needs to happen before conclusions can be meaningful. In the meantime sensible people take precautions.

These demos are a significant sign that "the silent majority" in many countries are beginning to wake up to what is being done to their jurisdictions, whether in the UK, France, Hungary, various American states and so on.  For too long, those opposed to the totalitarian stuff that's being flung in their faces have taken it 'lying down".

They have suffered silently while morons in Extinction Rubbish bring cities to a standstill. Now is the time for those on the sidelines to step forward and show their own strength.

No, we (I have recently had to conform to these "security checks") do it cos we simply want to get to our destination.  The moment we get off the plane we snatch off the mask.

I didn't post any figures on deaths due to lock downs.  As to your claim it may as well be a fart in the wind, e.g. totally useless.  You provide zero evidence.
