If you are getting cabin fever and want to get away but cannot leave Thailand, now is a good time to escape for a few days golfing in Phuket.

Their rainy season is normally over by Mid-October and the temperatures are bearable to play. All the courses there also drain very quickly so even after a tropical down pour you can resume your round within 25 minutes.

I flew on Thai Air Asia’s morning flight from Pattaya and the return was under THB2,000. They fly three times a week and there are of course more flights from Bangkok.

Quite a few of the car hire company’s booths at the airport in Phuket were closed so best to book ahead. We used Arun Phuket Carrent (www.arunphuketcarrent.com ) and paid THB800 a day for a Honda Jazz.

All the courses have special promotions available so best to either check out their websites or call ahead. Red Mountain whose normal green fees were THB6,000 had an all-inclusive rate of THB2,600 and I think Loch Palm was THB2,000.

Blue Canyon’s Canyon course is due to reopen in the next few months but their Lakes course is open at THB1,500 inclusive.

I would personally give Patong a miss, as at night most of the restaurants are closed and they had very few street lights on.

We spent most of our time in the Bang Tao area near Laguna which has great beaches, and many bars and restaurants open.

Perhaps now is a good time to get on a plane or maybe drive down to Phuket for some quality golf. Prices mentioned subject to change.
