Abuse of children in schools: Just a small crack exploited by parents who want money, says Sarasas founder

The embattled founder of one of Thailand's largest educational chains has continued to hit back at parents demanding action over alleged assaults of their kindergarten children.

He has even played down the serious issue of child abuse.

The arrest of a Thai teacher and nannies and a Filipino teacher at one of Sarasas's schools in Nonthaburi after damning CCTV footage emerged has prompted a major scandal and caused parents at the dozens of other Sarasas schools to demand answers and explanations.

Some have called for CCTV in every class and proper compensation.

Earlier in the week founder and chairman of Sarasas Piboon Yongkamol slammed parents on Thai Rath TV for being money grabbing and lacking courtesy. He even managed to bring up the subject of red shirts in his tirade.

Now in an interview on a Channel 3 news show the combative 79 year old has made further comments that are bound to inflame the situation further.

He said that parents complaining about the school and calling for it to be closed had exploited a small crack.

It was clear he was referring to the allegations over abuse of children in the kindergarten in that remark.

Praising his schools for being wonderful and achieving so much he said that parents calling for the closure of the school in Nonthaburi were just being selfish. Where were the 3,800 pupils to go?, he asked.

He said that he was not scared by such demands.

He could just sell up and make money from the land instead, he said.

He called for parents to be civilized.

But he didn't stop there.

Asked about parent claims for compensation he turned on them once again suggesting that they were asking for 2 million baht because their child had had a nightmare.

And then said that if parents thought his school was too expensive when they signed up why did they come?

He told them to go elsewhere if they are not happy.

In a piece in April The Nation called Piboon "visionary" reporting that his large chain of schools opened in 1964.

The school has dozens of branches nationwide and teaches tens of thousands of pupils. The group employs over 5,000 Thai teachers and well over 1,000 foreigners.

But now opinion is turning against the man. A commentary on the issue on Thai Enquirer suggested that people like Piboon were why students in Thailand were complaining about the Thai education system.

Instead of being left free to talk, this disgraceful man should be thrown in jail with the general population, who would take good care of him!

Because he's not at all interested in putting money ahead of manners (allowing his staff to abuse his customers' kids).

A ridiculous retaliation and deflection from the  cctv evidence that  shows the abuse is real and the investigations further demonstrate his schools are  not operating entirely legally.

So is he suggesting that parents are simply welcome to take away their infants if they object to them having their heads smacked  into the furniture  etc?

I always thought it was the schools that exploited parents, you have to pay extra

for this and that, then another fee for something else.

I take no responsibility for anything as its always someone elses fault

Just unbelievable that Piboon has the gaul to downplay child abuse.

He is responsible for things that happen in his organization, yet tries to downplay it and blame others, sick bar steward.

His organization put money before everything, before child welfare/ safety, and should be held accountable for what has happened.

once again we see the thai mentallity that making money is more important than the law/the people. "We should be able to hit and injure children/anybody because we are rich" is the catch call of these self important idiots, he should be taken to the cleaners for what he has alowed to happen in his schools. Lets hope the parents get big compensation for what has happened

Talk about taking one for them team. You took so much in profit and gave nothing back.

Yes, they absolutely should. I'll take his advice to mean if you don't want your kids to be beaten, send them somewhere else.

'Cos you lied about about its credentials and service. It's called false advertising.

What an absolutely entitled scumbag.

Coupled with the statements that he could make more money by closing the schools and selling the land and greedy parents joining the band wagon trying to sue him for unwarranted claims of 2m baht for abuse of their children in his schools its pretty obvious that he's only interested in making money and not in educating children.

Typical old Thai Dinosaur; sadly they are around every corner and it is they who are holding this country back, constantly trying to keep it in the Dark Ages and until they die off there will be little progress in most walks of life.

The news headline could have been better phrased.

I wrote to SARASAS FOUNDER (& son in charge) last year to complain about the CRAZY BEHAVIOUR of the vice director of SARASAS ROMKLAO IEP program

i have seen too many kids beaten in the back, hit with rulers, hit in their head (open hand), etc.......  and all out-of-range of cameras.  I'm sure everyone (about everyone) knew what was going on.  this teacher was there for decades I think. anyhow, i'm sure this is very common..

wish i could report it, but this was five years ago and I'm sure they would laugh at me.  at the time i told the "head" teacher.   well, i was new.  learned that did nothing.

i'll be happy once kids in high school start reporting Primary schools for abuse.

Do I sense desperation?

Lock up Piboon. Lock him up now. He is in total denial. Thai teachers automatically protect their own. It is like a muscle reflex. The problem is enormous here. And as the founder, he should take responsibility, man up and get to the bottom of this. But, that is what real men do. This man child is an idiot. He is busy trying to save face, while children are being abused and raped by their teachers.

If we only knew the extent of it. Thousands of teachers need to be arrested and jailed for long prison terms for the sexual abuse taking place here.

What a fossil. He exemplifies the view and attitude of HiSo Thailand.

Does he by chance own a resort on Ko Chang ? Same mindset

Possible solution, do not send your child to a Sarasas Group school, perhaps even withdraw your child from a Sarasas school. No school fees, no income, empty pockets for this dreadful man!!

He's obviously just stating facts. And we know who are the ones that come to Thailand for child trafficking. We know them very well.

Apparently he didn't see any problem with teachers not having the correct qualifications to teach as he himself has taught for 50 years without the correct qualifications! He said this very proudly. Talk about digging a hole for yourself...

so  much i  could  say but "tommy  tanker" sums it up

If you think tis is commonly accepted as the Thai mentality, I think you don't know many Thai people. Greed is a common wester trait too. This guy is just an a-hole.
