Thailand’s exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was infected with COVID-19 in Dubai, but he has already recovered from the contagion.

Thaksin told the BBC’s Thai service that, in August, he felt sick and lost his sense of smell and taste. He went to see a doctor and tested positive for COVID-19.

He added that he was treated at two hospitals, one in Dubai and another in Abu Dhabi, without the need of a respirator.

Just add in the Phra Dahammakaya, and then of course all will be well. Amnesty anyone?

And also don't forget former interior minister Vatana Asavahame, who has been languishing in his luxurious casino-hotel just across the border in Cambodia for years, trying to avoid a ("totally unjust", according to him) 20-year jail sentence for corruption.

With all these illustrious chaps coming home - Thaksin, Vorayuth "Red Bull", Phra Dhammakaya, Vatana et al - Thailand will soon have recovered to its former glory.

They all have one thing in common; all were 'allowed' to escape under illegitimate military governments.

I do wonder whether similar will be posted about some of the incumbents in a few years time

Seems now there is no kudos in being a politician or ex- politician  nowadays if you haven't got/had/recovered from the wuhu flu.

Lol yeah, at first it was shameful to step up , but now it turned into a competition.

Big deal.

35 million official cases where most survived, so probably 100 of millions that had covid 19, since most people has not ben tested.

Imagine if anyone who had covid 19 wanted the same attention as some politicians these days.

Given this current government is the most unpopular I have experienced in 30+ years here, I have no doubt that Thaksin would be welcome back with open arms.

Interesting to note that he swept to power in a landslide shortly after a similar economic crisis in 97 and 98.

Folk still believing and peddling the discredited criminal lunatic Sondhi's conspiracy theory nonsense about Thaksin stealing and corruption just shows how effective the Yellow Shirt propaganda was, and how out of touch they still remain. Most of them were not even here when he was in power anyway.

There’s no doubt he’s corrupt! Also, he sold AIS for just over 2 billion dollars and evaded sales tax on that by “gifting” it to his maid, who held on to it for a bit and then “gifted” it to his son (just how stupid did he think the people in Thailand are/megalomaniacal was he that he though he could get away with that?!) On top of that comes the illegal sale of a large plot of land in Bangkok which belonged to the government which he ordered sold to his wife for a third of the price the nation paid for. So in fact, he definitely did steal from the people!

Whatever you think of Thaksin and Yingluck they were democratically elected and then illegally removed from their position. He/she may have done some wrong but then I reckon so have a lot of politicians and not necessarily Thai ones. Don't even get me onto the bunch of lame jacka$$es currently running the country ... sorry correction ... not running the country.

Thailand does not like democracy because it usurps the power of the elite, those people that are getting richer by the day while the rest of the country descends into economic chaos which is now being blamed on Covid. Yes of course that has impacted but you can't cover over the cracks that were already there from years of corruption and mis-management and stupid fiscal policies that made no sense.

The whole upper echelons of Thai society need a good boot up their backsides because they don't give a damn about the serfs and their suffering but they bl@@dy well should. Unfortunately that is Thai culture and has been for 100's/1000's of years. You can't change that overnight but it's about time someone started to try.

Well, someone who evades sales tax on just over 2 billion dollars for the sale of on of his companies (AIS) and someone who orders a large plot of land belonging to the government sold to his wife, which is illegal because government employees are not allowed to do business with the government, and nonetheless for only a third of the price the government paid for it doesn’t deserve to be the leader of a nation and in most other countries he would’ve had to step down over that!

Oh and by the way, if you think you have to welcome guests of his majesty on his 60th coronation day celebration and have your own TV station spend more broadcasting time showing how you welcome said guests despite the fact that you were only a guest yourself and had no official function at said celebration and this after more or less months of open rebellion against the king then please don’t be surprised if you get ousted!

Also, his ludicrous “war” against drugs in which there were thousands of extrajudicial killings make him a fricking murderer!

That guy never was suitable to be the leader of a nation despite his business merits because he’s corrupt through and through!

Cost of living for a "fugitive" is exorbitant and billions are doubtlessly millions by now but you are correct...he is getting by

He sold AIS though the Thai stock market ,so though a loophole he did not pay any tax.

His maid at the time was the third richest person in Thailand .

That illegal sale of land ,not a smart move did not do his popularity a lot of good.

But if he did come back a lot of people would welcome him as has been said he did give a lot of people a voice ,my wife would be one

Just as many people would want him to come back so he can rot in prison! Including myself!
Also, if it was legal to sell AIS through that loophole and not pay any taxes on it then there wouldn’t have been the need to “gift” it to his “maid”! Either way, hate the guy and hope they catch and put him away some day!

They said that about France in the late C18, and Russia in the early C20...
