A Facebook post from a house owner called "Maruay Teekatanasakul" created a stir on Thai social media.

The owner had left his property empty for four years. But when he came back to check that all was well he found out that the people next door had had a key cut and were using it as if they owned it.

He said that they had run an extension cord from their house into his so they had electricity.

In addition there was lots of damage to fittings and things like air-con and pumps had gone missing.

In a subsequent post he said that he had waited for several days to sort things out with the neighbor because he didn't want to make trouble as they had lots of children.

However, after failing to see them or get satisfaction he had now resolved to report the matter to the local police.

After 10 years "Squatters Rights" come into play, luckily at this stage it's on 4 years.

The owner must be so stupid.

Didn't check for 4 years. No further comment needed.

Having lots of children is no excuse for taking someones property .

Not unusual.

German friend had to go home because her mother was ill. It took longer than expected and when she asked someone to check on her condo the next door neighbour had moved his brother and his wife in.

Sue and charge the neighbours for 4 years of rental.

The neighbours are really ridiculous people. Don't use or take what is not yours is Buddhist principle...

I think it’s all just a misunderstanding TIT

Or worked overseas.

A diver In know left his slippers at the boat-dock. When he returned they were gone.

Wonder how many will be classed as stupid to find the same thing when they are eventually let in by the glorious PM to visit their homes ?

But it does cure seating arrangements at meal times, or should I say "sitting positions" ?

????

If he came back after four years and the only thing wrong is damaged fittings and air cons, he is lucky. A fire, burst water pipe, or any other number of things could've totally destroyed the home. He should consider himself lucky that all he got was squatters who were willing to leave when he returned.

Ah so you think if i go on holiday for 2 weeks i will be lucky if i find squatters in my house, rest assured they would leave faster than they arrived.

If I ever vacate the house, it also means couple of dozen surveillance cameras kick into action. Should somchai even try it'll be War.

Why is it seen as ok to do this?

Wife's niece and her Swedish husband had a nice house built and had a house built for the parents. They both work in Sweden and so go back and forth. Father in law broke in to their house and started doing things and taking things. His son now 'lives' in the place. Needless to say, the husband never goes back to the village and the niece is always bending the wife's ear about the niece's brother.

I have decided never to leave anything useful or valuable in the garage. Always lock doors and set alarms. Breif the dogs on what to do if a stranger calls. Have CCTV.

That, though, didn't stop the little <deleted> referred to above jumping over the wall and wandering around the outside of the house at 6am one morning. 12 dogs, just barked, as they knew him, but saw he wasn't entering as normal.

Stealing is a way of life for some people. And when authorised to borrow something, some people fail to return it in the condition it went out, if at all....

That said, I am torn. Empty property when there are homeless people, hurts my civic pride. But theft of a property, by squatting in a property, bought and paid for is an abomination also.

Luckily it wasn´t in Spain, where "Squatters Rights" come into play after 48 hours.

It just seems to be the Thai way. My wife and FIL have taken over about 1/2 rai of adjoining land for a vegetable garden. I cleared it to protect our house from fires and also snakes and they immediately took it over with no shame. The absentee owner knows but has said nothing but does not mind the vegetables when she visits.

Another case of Thais not caring.

The owners always leave the house to fall into ruin.  Then one day they decide to rent it at full price like nothing happened.  If you act like an ass, don't get insulted if people ride you.

2 weeks is not 4 years.

I have to say this is par for the course with Thai.

I know a few guys that can't get back to their wives or girlfriends because of corvid. The neighbors are using them up as much as possible.  And the monthly money sent keeps everyone happy. It is a good time to be in thailand.
