Japanese businessman's round of golf turns into 100,000 baht credit card fraud

Police in Chonburi announced the arrest of a 44 year old female golf course cashier after she used a Japanese businessman's credit card to buy nearly 100,000 baht of goods.

Thanwa gave a whole string of excuses for her thievery and thought a foreigner wouldn't bother to report it.

She was arrested at the cashier counter of the Mountain Shadow Golf Club in Muang district of Chonburi.

However, the offence originated at another golf club in Siracha that was not named.

The disparity was not explained in Channel 7 news' written report.

They reported that the Japanese businessman went to use the facilities at the golf club in Bang Phra at 6am on September 5th before returning to Bangkok later that day.

On the 7th of September he received an SMS alert of his card being used to purchase gold and goods. He contacted the bank to cancel the card.

A further attempt to use the card failed later on the 7th.

Investigations soon led to the arrest of the suspect who blamed 20% interest on a loan shark loan, getting involved in a Ponzi scheme that didn't work out, the economy and Covid-19.

She also said that she thought targeting a foreigner would mean they wouldn't report the matter.

Police listened to all this nonsense and suspect her behavior is not a one off.

Investigations continue into the suspect's activities.

I use my card for almost everything, to get more points. No issues yet for past few years. I think a good idea is to cover the CSV number on the back.

  • Some Thais just can't help themselves and see tourists/foreigners as an easy target. Another reason why tourism was on the slide before Covid came along.

I rarely use my credit card here in Thailand.  One time in same day, I used it at physician clinic and at a well known hotel restaurant in ayutthaya.  Next day my bank contacted me to let me know that someone have been trying to buy stuff online with my credit card.  I would have never suspected a clinic or well known luxury hotel to fraud their customers.  Since then, I never hand my credit card to anyone without being present during the transaction.  Don't give your credit card to someone who will disappear with even for one minute.

Its more to with the staff than the actual vendor, the exact same thing happened to me in a well known nationwide store in Hua Hin.

Is that acceptable? I can't say that I have given it much thought. Suppose you memorized the CSV number (or recorded it discreetly) and then scratched off the CSV?  That would not stop fraud where (say) a purchase is made during a telephone conversation and the recipient notes the details and uses it for their own purpose.

Someone used my card and bought stuff for 25,000 THB. The police did not bother much when I reported the matter.

I've never used my credit card to pay for golf, but many of my friends have.  None have ever complained about fraud, but this story would scare the heck out of me.

I just used my Thai CC at a hospital....I usually use my usa card as I trust their system in place (notification of funny activities) and can immediately check my online account....can’t do that so will need to go to my Thai bank to monitor proper activity...

one bad apple can really hurt the image of Thai golf Thai employees Thai culture....the negative impact is much greater than one simple fraud case....

this is not limited to thailand far from it ive had cards cloned twice luckily for me wàs british and swiss banks cards.

Both times my account was refunded any losses not 100% certain thai banks would have ended with same outcome

You have to help the police help you. Now if you had offered them say…30,000 Baht cash up front….they probably could have solved the case (and maybe even gotten some of your money back) within the hour.

Same thing happened to a friend back in the states and it was someone my friend knew.

Interestingly, I recently used a credit at a major hotel in hua hin, the machine accepted the card but the hotel did not cause the card did not have numbers printed on the card and they needed it for incidentals per hotel policy. So in this case, the hotel creates opportunity for the staff due to their credit card practices. love my credit card with no numbers printed

The hotel do not need the card numbers for this as most hotels shadow funds on your card so if you do not pay for incidentals they can charge back when you leave. The amount they shadow is based on how long you are staying. This is common practise in major hotels.

The number one golden rule is never let your card out of your sight. The tip about removing CCV number is good advice. Most major card issuers have an app that lets you know when your card is used and how much the transaction is.

been using c.c. in TH for over 15 yrs, never ever any issue. The only time I got downright cheated was at a filling station in Italy, they booked the amount twice.

And as the economy slides, expect more of this.  Can't steal from other Thais if no one has any money here so the risk to foreigners being taken increases.

Come on u Thai bashers ?

Who do you think even made the Thais think of credit card fraud ?

Happens all over the world.

My c/c supplier KTC is hot as hell in ringing me wherever I am in the world  if even a sniff of anything suspicious which is more than I can say for the overseas card

A troll post adding nothing to the discussion has been removed

I don't use my cards now ever in Thailand  my card been cloned in 4 star hotels reception then in a lacoste shop in a big mall at the cash desk even though I watched them it took a few seconds by being distracted. Get all your stuff in front of you on top of a counter not out of site that's how they do it.

I believe, internationally, all credit cards use the chip now because of all the cloning. Only the US still swipe (because vendors don’t want to spend money and upgrade).

Put a limit on card and if over X amount you get a message. I set min message notice for any purchase over $100 USD

Yeah ... It’s amazing but true that almost in all cases your money is refunded by the CC company...

I get a message on my phone after each purchase. Over 100€ I have to agree to the purchase on the phone app.

my daughter get rip off of 32,000 bahts. , the police did not want to do anything unless she would front 10,000 baths

Some banks allow to set a limit per purchase / per day / per timeframe, check your online banking.

Why do some of you report to the police? I report to the CC company. They give me my money back and handles any reporting to the authorities if they find it worthwhile. I never have to deal with it.

I had my K-Bank debit card set up so it texted me the second it was used.  The phone in my pocket would vibrate and beep even before the cash was pushed out of the ATM, and before the cashier at BigC or TESCO even handed me my receipt.  Online purchases over a few baht had to be approved by a one time text.

Worth considering if you have a Thai based card.

Obviously, Channel 7 legal dept wouldn't allow the mentioning of where the card was stolen to avoid lawsuits and jail time of the newscasters because of the anti-defamation laws!
