Japanese businessman's round of golf turns into 100,000 baht credit card fraud

Featured Replies

I have been using different credit cards for around 30 years already, and for 10 years in Asia. Not only in Thailand, but in many other countries of the region as well. Mainly for hotels, restaurants and airline-tickets. I am not so much into shopping, as I have almost everything I need already, and therefore I usually practice my personal style of Sufficiency Economy. When I need to buy more costly stuff, I do this in Europe anyway.

So far, I only had two times problems, and this was with Air Asia Indonesia. Never with Air Asia in Malaysia, nor with Thai Air Asia.

The issue was more technical: I tried to book flights with Air Asia Indonesia from Europe, and during the payment procedure, the system crashed, screen was frozen, payment was drafted, but no tickets.

In both cases it was completely impossible to claim back the payment from Air Asia, neither from Indonesia nor directly from KL. This was due to a complete lack of communication channels. Dozens of e-mails were sent, and no response. Their AI-BS-hotline "AVA" is completely useless. And even after I personally went to a check-in counter at Jakarta Airport (no office there anymore), and after this guy there noted everything, nothing happened.

Luckily, in but both cases, the credit card company in Europe was very helpful and solved the issue later. So I didn't lose any money.

I will continue to use my cards, but will not use Air Asia Indonesia anymore, of course.

  • I rarely use my credit card here in Thailand.  One time in same day, I used it at physician clinic and at a well known hotel restaurant in ayutthaya.  Next day my bank contacted me to let me know that

I use my card for almost everything, to get more points. No issues yet for past few years. I think a good idea is to cover the CSV number on the back.

  • Some Thais just can't help themselves and see tourists/foreigners as an easy target. Another reason why tourism was on the slide before Covid came along.

Come on u Thai bashers ?

Who do you think even made the Thais think of credit card fraud ?

Happens all over the world.

My c/c supplier KTC is hot as hell in ringing me wherever I am in the world  if even a sniff of anything suspicious which is more than I can say for the overseas card

True, just like road deaths also occur worldwide, but one should pay more attention while driving in Thailand. Maybe KTC goes over the top because they are based in Thailand, do most of their business in Thailand, and will lose too much to card fraud if they take a lax approach?

Use my cards all over Asia. Safer than cash and reward points add up. If you are a victim of fraud and a good customer the credit card company always makes it right. The only time I have been ripped off in Asia is paying with dollars and getting counterfeit bills for change. Credit card companies have gotten better by sending you a text message when your card is used. If it is fraud just reply to the text message.

I never had any issues with my Credit Cards (MasterCard + American Express) in Thailand. Or any other countries for that matter.

My cards to have some kind of extra check, a pincode that needs to be entered for the payment to succeed. Also, when doing internet purchases a password is required as well.

I guess that makes it hard (perhaps close to impossible) to copy your card and use it?

A Troll post removed ... this topic is about Credit cards

I have been in Thailand for about 7 years now, and so far I have had fraudulent charges 3 times: 1 time for each of my 3 Thai CCs. Each time, my banks contacted me for suspicious activities, immediately cancelled or refunded those charges, and sent me a new card. My other Thais CCs fortunately haven't had any fraudulent charge. Banks always protect me, I'm not worried about using my CCs in Thailand or any countries I've been to.

Is that acceptable? I can't say that I have given it much thought. Suppose you memorized the CSV number (or recorded it discreetly) and then scratched off the CSV?  That would not stop fraud where (say) a purchase is made during a telephone conversation and the recipient notes the details and uses it for their own purpose.

When I make an in-person purchase I never get asked for the number

After contesting $USD 3000 charges from a trip to Japan I learned I can unlock and lock my credit cards on my mobile banking app. Now i unlock the card, make the purchase and immediately re-lock the card. Very useful security feature.

For online Credit card transactions I have been using the virtual credit cards at Privacy.com. This is very useful service to protect credit card fraud. The only draw back is you can’t collect points.

for those of you somehow saying this is why you don't use credit cards?  this is the EXACT reason why you SHOULD use credit cards over cash or debit cards.  (besides all the side benefits of points, tracking, credit rating, etc)

A debit card it will be YOU losing the money.  Cash is always a risk to lose/get stolen.

But CC companies take care of the fraud for you.  Its' insured. (I exclude any knowledge of CC's outside of US banks).

I have a card with Kbank and a mobile phone every time my card is used the transaction comes up on my mobile at the same time beautiful.

Lucky you...BB only tell me if purchase is above 1000thb.
