McAfee software creator jailed in Spain, sources say

BARCELONA (Reuters) - John McAfee, an anti-virus software creator indicted for fraud in the United States, was in jail on Tuesday pending extradition procedures after being arrested in Barcelona airport at the weekend, sources said.

 

The McAfee software founder was detained on Saturday when about to board a flight to Istanbul with a British passport, a Spanish police source said.

 

A judicial source said McAfee was then presented to a high court judge through a video call and sent to prison without bail where he will await the extradition process.

 

A third source, from the Catalonia region's justice department, said he was in the Brians 1 jail, which opened in 1991 in an industrial area 45 minutes by car from Barcelona. Some local politicians have been jailed there for corruption.

 

After he was arrested, McAfee's official Instagram account posted a "Free McAfee" message with a photo of him. The person running the account did not return a message seeking comment.

 

No other representatives were immediately contactable.

 

U.S. federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment on Monday against McAfee over charges that he evaded taxes and wilfully failed to file returns.

 

That came shortly after the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed it had brought civil charges against McAfee, alleging he made over $23.1 million in undisclosed compensation from false and misleading cryptocurrency recommendations.

 

He is alleged to have earned millions in income from promoting cryptocurrencies, as well as through consulting work, speaking engagements, and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary.

McAfee has lived a storied life...at one point in time he built an estate in the middle of a Belize jungle...kept women of color around as playthings...experimented in drugs to keep one aroused...and abandoned his palace and fled into the jungle and eventually another country to avoid being abducted by armed men...

 

He is a Hugh Hefner without class...a James Bond without a government contract...????

Nothing, because he have made a run all his life, just like Mr. Boss from Thailand is doing. Clearly a criminal in many aspects and wanted in many countries as well.

Interpol issued the red notice on Wednesday. It has gone out to the international police agency’s other 193 member countries requesting help in locating Mr. Vorayuth

Some years back an aging dictator- torturer from South America went to Spain for medical treatment and was greeted with steel bracelets.  I think there were other such incidents.  There are still a few living former U.S. government people with some sort of war crime stuff from decades ago hanging over their heads.  Don't be surprised if you wake up one morning to hear a name you haven't heard in decades has been arrested by a certain European country.

There is a documentary out there about him.  They ask some of his girls about his er, entertainment preferences.  What they talked about was, well, to understate it, most distasteful.  Can't hear his name any more without thinking of it.

I'm pretty sure Spain nabbed at least one as well.  One of those stories that made the rounds and was gone in a few days.  Maybe a less familiar personage, like Pinochet's Minister of Death or something.

He has been charged for criminal income tax evasion and civil fraud. See article.

As he has previously evaded apprehension, he has not been tried; thus not convicted.

just as Al Capone, he is done !

For the sake of future ‘developments’ international arrest and extradition for tax fraud is a thing.

He's an interesting guy who has got a lot of great stories to tell. I hope his stay in prison will be brief and a source of another round of great stories to add to his collection. Tax evasion, crypto fraud, good stuff.

He is a legend in his own life time .He has escaped far worse things than this .Always expect the unexpected with McAFee .His life story which is mind boggling can be found on YT . I find him extremely fascinating ,but suspect that he Sold his Soul to old Nick .
