Survey finds negative views of China soar among advanced economies

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Unfavorable views toward China have soared in the past year in the United States and many other advanced economies, a survey of 14 countries conducted by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center showed on Tuesday.

The survey, conducted from June 10 to Aug. 3, found that a majority in each of the countries polled had an unfavorable opinion of China. In all, 14,276 adults were polled by telephone. https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/10/06/unfavorable-views-of-china-reach-historic-highs-in-many-countries/

In Australia, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United States, South Korea, Spain and Canada, negative views reached their highest points since Pew began polling on the topic more than a decade ago.

The findings come against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, which began in China, and U.S. President Donald Trump's bid for re-election on Nov. 3, a campaign in which China has been a major foreign policy issue.

The Pew report said that across the nations surveyed, a median of 61 percent of respondents said China had done a bad job dealing with the outbreak, while 37 percent believed it had done a good job.

Only the United States received a more negative evaluation from those surveyed, with a median of 84 percent saying it had handled the outbreak poorly.

The report said perceptions of Beijing's handling of the pandemic had colored people’s overall views of China, with those who thought it had done a bad job much more likely to have an unfavorable view of the country.

The same applied to people's confidence in Chinese President Xi Jinping, with a median of 78 percent across the 14 countries saying they had "not too much or no confidence in Xi to do the right thing regarding world affairs."

Even among those who rated China’s coronavirus outbreak response positively, no more than four in 10 said they trusted Xi, Pew said.

Even as concerns about Xi rise, the survey found that in most countries, more had faith in him than in U.S. President Donald Trump. In Germany, 78 percent said they had no confidence in Xi – but 89 percent said the same of Trump.

When it came to perceptions of economic strength, China fared relatively well, and only in the United States, Japan and South Korea did more people consider America the world’s leading economic power.

The countries surveyed https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/10/06/unfavorable-views-of-china-reach-historic-highs-in-many-countries were Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United States.

Unfortunately the article doesn't mention the other reasons to dislike China. Concentration camps, forced sterilizations, genocide, the unjust claims in the South Chinese sea, the occupation of Tibet etc. It's not only advanced economies, China now has troubles with almost all neighboring countries.

The headline should read:
Survey finds negative views of China soar among Western countries allied with the United States.

That would be more accurate.

Wonder why? everyone now wants to eat a Chinese literally ????

At least 1 million Muslim minority Uighurs are held in Chinese government-run detention centers. There are at least 85 known centers in Xinjiang and the Muslim world does <deleted> all

Maybe you can give us some names of countries around China without negative views about China?  China has problems with every country. Except maybe with North Korea.

Okay, even if China does not show up to be the most reliable and nice country in the world, who can trust this survey. The survey is made by one of their enemies and has out of that reason already taken a stance in the matter. Out of what I believe they asked about 28 countries and got a majority of negative views on China. After that they probably downsized the survey to only the 10 most negative countries and took in another 4 to make it have a microscopic chance to be trustworthy.

The survey probably also carries Donald "Mr Covid-19" Trumps seal of approval.

It seems that also you have negative views about China. But at the same time you do not trust the outcome of this poll? ????

They are lucky, if the Chinese were more practical and less civilised then they would kick them out. Same as what Myanmar did with the muslim minority there ...

With numbers like these Xi is not going to do well in the next election... oh wait...

What I want to know is how long it will take for China to release the next plague? Will they just wait till exactly when we think this one is over, or will they wait till we've relaxed a little?

Last night Jim Cramer on CNBC said China doesn't want to see Trump re-elected. David Faber (who I like but he is still a dweeb) seemed shocked by that statement, but China has made it pretty plain; they will roll Biden like a drunk in a back alley.

I'm not quiet reading your statement ,forgive me! Whats your view on china ? It seems your saying there are no rats ( corrupt communist officials) in china

The ones who left the ship, the rats, were the corrupt officials at that time! Mao pushed them to the beach but the bastards could swim ...

If the Thai did a Survey on the Chinese, I am sure the result would be different.

Off course they would only ask certain people, where at least one member in the family is of Chinese descent.

You are right, I do not fancy China especially much. However, I would not put my trust about the worlds opinion in a poll made by their worst enemy.

Totally agree!  Is it possible though, to spread a little verbal hostility toward the reason why the world is in this global crisis! Ever since they were allowed into the world picture they abused everything they touched

Thailand is going to put tourists in prison and cleverly make the tourists pay a fortune to go to prison and run a hurdle course for the privilege.

The people who run those places mostly fled China (or were Vietnamese boat people). What are they supposed to do now?

Who would guess that bullying small countries, creating debt traps, unleashing plagues upon the world every five years, suppressing people and unlawfully grabbing land and ocean during a global crisis doesn't lead to friends! ????.  Indeed I hope business owners look to Vietnam, Thailand, India and other countries for production and move away from Winnie the Flu.

In general, I would say it is a healthy, and safe attitude toward the CCP. They are considerably more heinous, than the most heinous governments among us. They are up to no good.

Having said that, I am no fan of Trump and his trade policies toward China, Iran and Cuba are beyond ignorant, and have been very unproductive. One could describe them as downright destructive.

Trump is on his way out the door. Let us hope Xi will be soon, too.

I would be more curious as to what country’s people the like China the most-the people of each  country that is, not the governments
