Govt studies "Land Bridge" idea to connect two seas

 

 

BANGKOK (NNT) - Deputy Government Spokeswoman, Traisulee Traisaranakul announced that the government led by PM and Minister of Defence General Prayut Chan-o-cha is proceeding to reform the Thai economy by strengthening the self-reliance of citizens, as well as investing in mega projects to boost Thailand’s competitive ability. At the moment, the Ministry of Transport is studying a land bridge mega project to connect the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. The proposed bridge is expected to be 130 kilometers long, and run from a seaport in Chumphon to a seaport in Ranong; it would reduce transportation time by at least two days.

 

Miss Traisulee said the land bridge project will be studied over the course of a year. If the study reveals promising results, it will take a further two and a half years to begin construction. According to the initial plan, two deep seaports will be built in Ranong and Chumphon as transit stations for cargo from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman sea. The two ports would be connected by a railway system and a motorway. With a land bridge available, cargo ships will use the two ports, instead of taking the traditional seaway that requires ships to access the strait of Malaca.

 

In addition, General Prayut also stressed that the study of the project must be prudent and cover all aspects including worthiness, environmental effects, and local opinions.

 

The land bridge project is part of the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) development plan that covers four upper provinces of the southern region - Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. The development plan will create a fully-covered transport system that can also connect to the Eastern Economic Corridor or EEC.

 

The Deputy Government Spokeswoman also added that the land bridge project will connect Thailand to Middle Eastern regions that produce oil and Europe that is a large consumer goods market, and Eastern Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, China, and other countries that are consumers as well as also being known as the factory of the world.

 

It’s planned that the project be funded by both the government and the private sector.

 

According to the Minister of Transport, Saksayam Chidchob, private sector businesses that are interested in investing in infrastructure, will fund all kinds of transport systems including deep seaports, railways, and motorways.

Study first where you get money for poor people who don't have job's! Forget your idiot bridge , submarine and fast railway!

 

... an idea probably grown on Chinese bullstool (just like 'shrooms actually, perfect fit!), as their brothers from the north will build it 'for them' ...

 

If they built a tunnel then they could use the submarines between Chumphon and Ranong.

getting closer ......    but the only sensible way of connecting the Gulf with the Andaman Sea is by way of a canal.

The proposed plan would have  a bvoat coming from the west to Ranong then off-loading at the port and reloading onto trucks or train to the port at Chumphon where the on and off-loading procedure  is done in reverse onto another boat which can then steam over to the EEC port and everything is transfer again to a train.

A canal would dispense with all this time-consuming handling of the goods. It would also keep Ranong and Chumphon as nice places to visit for tourists (if they are ever allowed back).   The entrance and exit from the canal could be kept free of industrial development (apart from canal maintenance).  A canal would be more ecologically freindly.

Strengthening of Self reliance of citizens eh .. is that code for taking them back 50 yrs for without foreign currency coming in from tourism that is where they are heading .. 

Land bridge eh .! Why not just call it what it is which is a proposed railway across the country linking one coast with another instead of lining thereselves up with the Land bridge clownery ..  

I'm sure tourists will be overjoyed to look at the endless lines of dilapidated Chinese cargo ships passing by the beaches everyday. These totally environmentally friendly Chinese cargo ships is exactly what is needed to restore the sea life farangs has destroyed. What a brilliant idea, just like the implementation of ฿100,000 fines for smoking at the beaches. Super idea. It will take Thailand from 4.0 all the way to 11, no questions asked.

...and expensive project ordered by Supreme Headquarters in Beijing. But, in a typical gesture of fraternal camaraderie, the big brothers will no doubt make it a fifty-fifty deal.…

 

Thailand will pay for…and China will own it.

A superhighway was built that crosses the isthmus, but as the location of the harbours at either end were undetermined, Highway 44—the only finished part of the project—does not end at the sea. The highway's two lanes were built 150 m apart to leave space for railroad tracks and eventually also a pipeline. As of 2020, the highway runs from 8°18.11′N 98°47.03′E to 9°9.47′N 99°31.02′E." Never going to happen  just another study to put money into a waste of time

Yes, that's the fast road from Krabi towards Surat Thani.  It is a good road...

An alternative yet to be put forward is a string of hot air balloons carrying containers running along elevated twin cables coast to  coast propelled by Trade  Winds when possible?

Minimal environmental impact, visual impact reduced  by shrouds on the containers depicting flights of birds and  emitting appropriate sound  effects alternated with political speeches of self congratulation ?

Basically similar to a horizontal ski lift operation with the hot  air piped from a roof vent on Parliament Buildings  and operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Hot Air ?

Land bridge? It's just a motorway or a railway between two ports, dudes.

 

They will be studying to see if Don Muang can be upgraded to a flying machine hub next.

Well I would like to bridge her gap.   555  LOL

When they went ahead & invested billions into upgrading the road from Tak to Mae Sot & loaned monies to Myanmar (Ital Thai is building) a deep sea port (Diwai I think) to avoid containers having to travel from Laem Chabang down & around Singapore by ship & all the way up again, I thought this was the end of this extravagantly  expensive silly idea.

They come up with these brainstorms obviously to line their buddies & their own pockets

OK lets say the biggest Chinese container ship wants to enter Bk, then the bridge should be at least 100 meters high and the pillars  should be at least 100 meters apart from each other

Ok you break the bridge for opening to pass ships. That same ship is 62 meters wide, so you need opening of at least 100 meters.

Next if you need hanging opening bridge, you need two towers at least 100 meters high, efficiently and 100 meters wide. Otherwise 2 parts opening with each at least 2 times 50 meters of road to raise up.

Ok would be a great opportunity of course for the Chinese to built.

 

Not logical. The time saved on the sea trip will be used up by unloading at one port, reloading onto rail/road transport, travel between 2 ports, unloading train/truck, reloading ship. Probably about 4 days to do this - if no bottlenecks .....

And you now have 2 ports to run, lots of stevedores/crane operators, drivers, fuel for train/truck - what will the transshipment costs be?
