Inspirational Thai senior skates her way to cancer recovery

A 63 year old Thai woman did not let breast cancer stand in her way and refused to let the disease devastate her incredible life.

Now the remarkable Nongluck Chairuettichai - better known as Aunty Jiap - is even a member of the Thai national downhill longboard team.

She is also a "poster girl" of the "Pink Alert - Check and Share Project 2020" designed to raise awareness of breast cancer and encourage self analysis and early treatment.

She has even been featured in the foreign media and is seen on TV.

A video featuring her exploits was published by Thai PBS World and was entitled "healing wheels" about the lady skating her way to cancer recovery.

Jiap was someone who put off going to the doctor and by the time she did she needed surgery and chemotherapy.

This knocked her back but did nothing to dampen her indomitable spirit.

She had already been introduced to skateboarding by her son but she took it a step further and got to be an expert and got on the Thai downhill team on a longer version of the regular skateboard.

She credits the exercise and focus with having played an important part in building up her body post-treatment.

And not just that. She thinks that the positivity that has always been her forte has meant she has been able to kick cancer into touch.

"Nothing is too hard - whether it is skateboarding or beating cancer," she said.

"Don't think about dying - just focus on recovery," she said.

She encouraged women to check themselves out for symptoms and then do something about it.

When others might be putting their feet up and feeling old and sorry for themselves this sprightly pensioner is looking forward to a bright and long lasting future.
