The Ministry of Health announced yesterday that in the first nine months of this year, there has been a 70 percent decrease in malaria cases when compared to the same period last year. The announcement was made by Health Minister Mam Bun Heng during an event to launch the final phase of the “eradication of Plasmodium Falciparum strain of malaria in Cambodia 2020-2023”.

The event took place at Kampong Speu Provincial Hall and was attended by Kampong Speu Provincial Governor Vei Samnang, WHO representative Li Ailan and a number of other officials. Bun Heng said Cambodia had a total of 7,668 cases of malaria and zero deaths, in the first nine months of this year, compared to 25,499 cases and zero deaths last year.

“According to the National Malaria Control Programme report of the National Centre for Malaria Control, Parasitology and Bacteriology, there has been a huge reduction in the number of cases of malaria so far this year,” he said. “This is a proud achievement for Cambodia, and our biggest step made so far to eradicate the disease,” he added.
