The Ministry of Education yesterday announced a temporary suspension of all public and private educational institutions for two weeks in Phnom Penh and Kandal province over COVID-19 concerns after some parents and guardians refused to cooperate with track and trace measures after coming in contact with Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó and his delegation.

The move came after the Ministry of Education was unable to gather adequate information from nearly 900 people identified to have been exposed to COVID-19 positive Szijjártó while attending his official visit at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh. The closure is aimed at “preventing the community spread of COVID-19 by transmission at schools while waiting for test results,” the Ministry said in a statement yesterday, adding that students should still participate through e-learning platforms.

They appealed for the 900 people who came in contact with the Hungarian delegation to continue their quarantine. The Ministry identified a karate training club, several private institutions and one Provincial Department of Education to have people who attended the event.
