DSI warns Thais about foreigners ripping them off via online friendship/dating sites

The Department of Special Investigations has warned the Thai people to watch out for foreign criminals ripping them off on online dating and friendship sites. 

 

The modus operandi of the criminals is to post an attractive Chinese looking man or woman who desires dating or friendship from a nearby country.

 

Chat starts innocently enough on friendship and romance until the victim is hooked. 

 

Then the subject of business is introduced. The "person" behind the profile speaks of their business suffering due to the pandemic and that this has led them to moving into online stock trading or cryptocurrency dealing. 

 

Not surprisingly they say they have made a lot of money like this. 

 

Chat then becomes more serious as links to various unregulated sites follows, with the criminal leading the way saying that they know all the ropes and all the pitfalls. 

 

The victim is led along convinced that they must follow every step to get rich.

 

Ultimately bank accounts opened in Thailand or cryptocurrency accounts are used to fraudulently siphon off money.

Sums up Thailand ! Gov agency telling Thais to be wary of foreign cheats, crooks and scammers ! Guess it thinks it's  not its  responsibility to warn foreigners of the cheats crooks and scammers of Thai origin ! So gradifying that there are few, and will be even fewer foreigners in their miserably failing country !

They should also be warning Thai's ,about Thai's scamming them with various

pyramid schemes,you know the ones offering 10-20 % returns a month ????,

even though common sense says its not possible,they still get hooked on

a regular basis .

Most of the romance scams there is a Thai involved somewhere along the line, ie, opening of bank accounts and the ones I know about is a poo ying posing as a customs official extracting the duty to paid on the parcel 

The land of the greedy and the gullible provides a fertile playing ground for such scammers.

Well... what goes around comes around, as they say.

Darn, those wretched foreigners learn FAST!

They have and do. I can provide a link if you can read Thai. 
 

This is the latest scam they are referring to, it isn’t just in Thailand, they manage to get your photo ID as part of your registering and other details to rip you off. Good to see the Thai authorities being proactive on this issue and saving people’s life savings.

I don’t think that example is a purely thai versus foreigners. Perhaps foreigners are more gullible, unable to speak the language, and unable to pick up on other red flags that would be obvious to  local man. 
That being said, Thai men also fall for it. Probably through desperation and inexperience with women.

 

This particular scam is worldwide and I was speaking to a woman in Australia two days ago that has lost luckily only $1,000. But she is more worried that they have her photo ID and personal details. It is a big headache to change everything. I regard her as quite clever, so it is obviously quite a slick scam. 
 

Similar to those farangs in Bangkok ripping off their own countrymen of their life savings with the boiler rooms.

Your reply shows you know absolutely nothing about Thailand.

Thai culture is replete with saving face and assigning blame in order to save face.

Foreigners are the perfect scapegoat for assigning such kind of blame:

 

1) COVID-19 cases increasing? - too many foreigners coming into Thailand, their fault

2) Unemployment / too many Thai people out of work? - too many foreigners stealing jobs from Thai's, their fault again

 

3) Getting scammed a lot lately? - Too many dodgy foreigners trying to trick Thai's, their fault yet again

4) Allegations of prostitution being rife in Thai society? - There is no prostitution in Thailand, except illegal foreign prostitutes who come from African and Eastern European countries - those pesky foreigners again

They still keep falling for these scams ,even though you say they have been warning

Thai people that if offered an unbelievably high return on their money it's going to be a scam,

with Bank interest rates been so low,it must be a lot easier for scammers to find victims,

and find them they do.

This is a new one involving crypto. Some great returns are possible with crypto. It is foreigners doing this scam. Fact. 
 

This is a warning to make Thais aware of it. Common sense. Good advice.
 

Are you suggesting they leave out the detail that “foreigners” are doing it, just so a few hyper sensitive foreigners won’t get offended? Sugar coat it? I prefer the truth, and the warning will more effective with more details. 
 

Interestingly more than half the comments here are nothing to do with the scam of the article but instead a bunch of blokes complaining and venting they have been scammed themselves by Thai people without giving details of the scam. 
 

If they truly have been scammed you would think they would welcome this action to prevent more people being scammed.

Australians don't have photo ids, have driving license with photo.

Ripping off foreigners falls under classification of "protected profession" and foreigners not allowed in that sector. Thais only

Seems the DSI should be warning Thais about corrupt officials scamming the citizenry. 

Great that foreigners don’t have to be warned all is secure for them..????
