This would be laughable if he were not a Supreme Court Judge.   wrt what constitutes ‘a marriage’ he needs to pay more attention to the law and the Constitution and spend less time listening

Somchi I thought I was safe to share my opinion of my  countries freedom of speech ,instead you rant on me with off topic Trump nonsense

How has freedom of speech been denuded, particularly with not attending superspreader religious ceremonies? Ministers can preach and worshipers can pray online. Its 2020 not 1791.

No, for some folks here and in the U.S., it IS still circa 1791...

I'm in love with my big bike, we want to get married. Is that a problem??

I know why you want to get married. It's the good vibrations, right?

Kiwis love their sheep, and Arabs love their camels. No, I don't see a problem.

It could of course be that he’s just smooching up to Bennett.

I don't understand the judge's problem. Religious gatherings are just one type of gathering that is affected - others include consultations, board meetings (corporate and charity), sports/games, viewings (including cinema etc.

In the case of religious gatherings, it is possible to do the same as with board meetings and other such gatherings, which is to gather together electronically with the possibility of some social distancing physical gathering. This does not actually impugn on the freedom of association or freedom of speech as set out in the US Constitution. So I don't understand what he is doing except to say that we all miss gathering and won't it be great when this pandemic is over and we can gather again.

Reasonably well-written for a sixth-grader. I'm shocked she feels like her freedoms are constrained by being "grounded"?

Look if people want to celebrate religious services they can. Has anyone (congregants) been arrested or prosecuted?

Recommending is different than mandating.

Alito is just beyond the norm. Another Leonard Leo appointee.

It seems that someone was arrested in Florida, a Pastor...news from the Guardian and ABC. Does say anything about congregants though.

With all due respect (emphasis on respect that it due), I would point out to all that WW II restrictions for the common good far exceeded the current Covid restrictions. Additionally, I think that the post American Revolution religion defenders of Puritanism in Massachusetts, the Anglican Church in Virginia (receiving public tax support), and many others being told that all religious belief was to be treated equally in the new nation and to be separated from any government role would feel they had a much greater restriction with which to adjust.

"This guidance is not intended to infringe on rights protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution or any other federal law, including the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA). The federal government may not prescribe standards for interactions of faith communities in houses of worship, and in accordance with the First Amendment, no faith community should be asked to adopt any mitigation strategies that are more stringent than the mitigation strategies asked of similarly situated entities or activities".

"In addition, we note that while many types of gatherings are important for civic and economic well-being, religious worship has particularly profound significance to communities and individuals, including as a right protected by the First Amendment".

The Justice is speaking  toward  freedoms ,such as First Amendment rights inherit from the Constitution ! Surely this can apply to all gatherings where people exercise their civic rights to speak and to gather!

Freedom  is not realized until you loose it!

"Coronavirus is taking away people’s freedom bit by bit. First, it was not going to school, then no friends, and then being stuck at home. This isn’t really freedom. Freedom is being able to do what you want and being able to do things that make you happy".

All rights of the individual go as far as the next citizens nose. While I respect the religious communities right to control their own bodies ( equally with all women to control their own bodies in healthcare decisions ... Yep, including abortion) and I respect their right to die ... no one can claim a religious right to spread a potentially fatal disease. Their religious practice “right” is restricted as much as any other “right” if it endangers others.

If your "faith" isnt strong enough for you to worship privately or as an individual on significant days during a crisis,  you are  doing it wrong.

Some of the best people I have ever know, with the strongest convictions, have not set foot in a place of organised worship in years.

My mother spent evey Sunday morning when I grew up visiting one elderly freind or another. an elderly freind. She brought them food, helped hem with things hey needed drove them where hey ad to go. She called that church if asked why she never went to worship publicly.

She also kept her beliefs to heself and spoke through actions.

This guy, and trump's supporters at their rallies, are just Darwin's Theory at work!

Let them continue, and let them have their way, the Universe has it's own grand plans that will benefit us, the few who something inside their heads.

This US justice, seems to have the Americans sense of Freedom so ingrained, that he forgets that the enemy is an invisible virus that he cannot get a gun and kill off.

Him and all Americans can continue to gather and infect each other in what ever gathering that they feel is so important that they cannot gather in the new way, electronically.

The freedom to die from the CV, is what so many Americans are still doing, because they are too stubborn to use their common sense, and stay apart and wear masks, be cautious, and stay alone when they are sick. The world cannot help the ignorant or the stupid people, who will not help them selves.  I do hope that the smart Americans are able to survive this pandemic, and good luck to them all, because if they are still dying, 1000 per day, it will not be much longer before one tenth of the population has died from the help of this Corona virus.

Religious Liberty? Sheesh. It's a freakin' pandemic, certainly we can practice our religion at home for months?

"religious liberty is fast becoming a disfavored, right" This is the sort of dross pompeo and barr have been peddling on the conservative speaking tours. Other than white terrorists murdering people in churches and synagogues I don't think religious freedoms are beign restricted?

He's a very strange duck.

He went off an at least eight issues bugging him.

Specific to the OP:

Seventh, he turned to how COVID-19 has affected religious liberty.

Just as the COVID restrictions have highlighted the movement toward rule by experts, litigation about those restrictions, has pointed up emerging trends in the assessment of individual rights. This is especially evident with respect to religious liberty. It pains me to say this, but in certain quarters, religious liberty is fast becoming a disfavored, right.

He is not really strange. He is a religious fanatic, quite common in USA. Not really a jurist either.

one of the carefully  groomed judges whose purpose is to push agenda issues Republicans cant get through the ballot box or other democratic process. Right-wing operatives really. The scary thing is if these people had more power they would be as deadly as the Taliban. There has never been real lock down in the US and now that the virus is raging out of control everything is more open.  I PRAY President Biden immediately orders on Jan 21 from his grab bag of powers, some kind of grave 6-8 week properly enforced lock down so the curve can be flattened while vaccination ramps up. Hopefully I'll be outta here by then.????
