I'm considering opening a business in either Lamai or Chaweng. Just curious as to what the average rate of pay would be for a Thai cashier/shop attendent? Is it hourly pay or something else?

Also are there storage units for lease anywhere on Koh Samui?

Thanks in advance. I've already gotten so much useful info from this forum. Finding this site has been more helpful than all the other sites combined!

Depending on the skills and responsobilities of the employee, my guess woukld be the average pay rate for some one doing this type of work would be 6K to 9k per month.

with staff if they are good pay them well if you want to keep them, start them off with 5k-6k give them bonuses if they dont have days off say 1000b this way the day off cost them a lot so they dont do it if buisness in volves daily turnover give them bounuses if they hit there target say another 1000b .if they get 7-10000b per month then they are good for you ,and they will find it hard to find a job that pays this well unless they have been to university ,this works as i have kept my main staff for over 6 years and they are all very happy ...i hope :o

for an eglish speaking staff you will pay about 6-9k as others have posted.

please remeber that on top of that you will need to pay social security and social fund. paying it is will benefit you as you

you will be able to prove your buisness is employing Thai staff.

Does it include food and accomodation?

A good construction worker gets 250-300 Baths a day, so about 7 k a month plus accomodation - 6 k is not a lot for english speaking stuff.

i dont know what construction worker you are reffering to. basic staff in construction are about 100-150 baht per day.

higher skilled such as carpenters or electricians can get 200-250 maybe even 300.

a shop attendant that speaks english can have a starting salalry of about 6-7k.

I think construction worker rates are higher than this,

try

labourer 200 baht + per day

semi skilled 350 baht + per day

skilled 500 baht + per day

foremann 600 baht+ per day

Thats maybe true for a remote area in Isaan during the 90s. In Chaweng or Lamai area nobody would work for this salary.

I built a business house with a construction company from Ban Makham and I had some talking with the workers:

The salaray for an unskilled female worker is 200 B/day while her husband got 300 B/day.

Life (food and accomoadation) on Samui is very expensive, nobody can be satisfied with 6 k/month.

In my experience you will not find a satisfied english speaking stuff if you pay less than 10 k.

My wife (german and english) is working parttime (30 h a week) she gets 5 k but she is not satisfied.

By the way, last week I had a talking with a female english spoken stuff in a restaurant on Khaosan Road: She has only 4,5 k for 12 hours a day and 6 days a week - free food and accomodation - and she wants to change.

Thanks for all of your input. I was already thinking of using a commission type pay incentive to drive sales, it sounds like that may be the way to go. Do Thai workers "buy into" the incentive pay or do they just man the register and let the sales go. I'm from the US and incentive pay is a big part of sales.

Also, are women the main source of retail workers? Are they more trustworthy than Thai men? My interactions with Thai workers has shown me that I would be more likely scammed/stolen from by a Thai man than a Thai women. The Thai women I've delt with have been extremely trustworthy.

Thanks
