Two Thai vaccine prototypes at human trial stage, 5 being tested on animals

The National Vaccine Institute has given a progress report on Thailand’s seven main Covid-19 vaccine programmes.

 

Two of the seven vaccine candidates have been successfully tested on animals and are moving into human trials, said Dr Nakorn Premsri, director of the institute.

 

The two candidates entering Phase 2 trials on humans are the mRNA vaccine being developed by Chula Vaccine Research Centre (Chula VRC) and the DNA vaccine developed by BioNet-Asia.

 

The five other vaccine candidates are all currently being tested on animals.

 

The protein subunit vaccine developed by Baiya Phytofarm has passed tests for safety and efficacy in animals. It is now being tested on laboratory animals to find out whether it triggers an immune response.

 

The inactivated vaccine developed by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) is in the early stage of testing for immunity in laboratory animals.

 

The viral-like particle (VLP) prototype developed by the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), is at the preliminary stage of immunity tests in laboratory animals.

 

The viral vector vaccine prototype developed by NSTDA is in the early stages of testing for immunity in laboratory animals.

 

The live-attenuated pathogen developed by NSTDA is in the preliminary stage of immunity tests on laboratory animals.

 

Nakorn also reported details of progress on BioNet’s DNA vaccine prototype.

 

"BioNet has received a grant from the Australian government to conduct Phase I human trials in Australia.”

 

Phase 2 trials on humans are scheduled in Thailand early next year, he added.

 

Meanwhile Chula VRC expects its mRNA vaccine prototype will enter human trials around April 19 next year.

 

The mRNA prototype will first be tested on 72 volunteers – aged 18-55 and 36 aged over 55 – to find the appropriate dosage. This group will then be divided into groups of 12 for further testing.

 

If the tests succeed, the Chula prototype will enter second-phase human trials on 600 people in two age groups in June 2021. Volunteers will be able to register for the trial via Facebook or the Chula VRC website.

They should turn to the TVF for potential victims volunteers for the human trials.

Seven on trials...is it a case of "here try this..if it doesn't work come back again as we have another half dozen you can try"..,????

Looks like the astrazenica vaccine is only 70% effective.  Thailand better look at the Moderna and Pfizer vaccinez if they want want a workable one to copy...

Nope, go back and read the details of their announcement.

 

The 70% figure was an average of different dosing regimens. They found one dosing approach had a 62% efficacy rate, but the other had a 90% efficacy rate. The latter approach involved giving a half dose first, followed by a full dose later. It sounds like that's the approach they're now going to pursue.

But here's the detail that I've been wanting to hear more about, and obviously am going to have to wait....leaving a big unknown question of how long any vaccine-inducted immunity is likely to last:

Latest news from Astra Zenica is the vaccine is 90% effective when administered as a half dose first, then a second full dose.

The refrigeration infrastructure for the AstraZenica vaccine is much less demanding than the Rna vaccines, which is important for poorer countries.

So far, it's looking quite good. They've only been tracking people for about 6 months but the immunity from natural infection seems to be lasting at least that long.

 

COVID immunity lasts 6 months, new study shows

 

Since vaccines are designed to produce a higher titer of antibodies than a natural infection (the Moderna vaccine for example,was shown in studies to produce 10 to 18 times more antibodies than found in convalescent plasma) then vaccine-induced immunity should most likely last somewhat longer.

If the two percentages coincide by demographic, it could be an excellent opportunity to cull the herd.

I've previously speculated on a vaccine for stupidity, perhaps I was looking at the wrong end of the telescope.

I find myself torn/divided on that point...

 

On one hand, I'm almost to the point of saying, OK, let them have their "freedom" and live (or die) with the consequences.

 

But on the other hand, stupid, careless, ill-informed people who get themselves infected and sick also have an unfortunate tendency to spread the same to innocents around them. Which makes me feel the health and benefit to society of not allowing it outweighs the "you had it coming" aspect of doing nothing.

apparently the first jab gives immunity of 70% then you have a booster jap 21days later bring it up to 90%. In Australia they announced that vaccination will probably start in March. Quantas Airlines then stated no jab no fly policy.

Depends whether you have the half jab then the full one later the 90% effective and easier to store and transport.

I believe the flu jab is only 50% efficient ?
