LONDON (Reuters) - Meghan, Britain's Duchess of Sussex, has revealed that she had a miscarriage, an extraordinarily personal disclosure coming from a high-profile British royal.

The wife of Prince Harry and former actress wrote about the experience in detail in an opinion article published in the New York Times on Wednesday, saying that it took place one July morning when she was caring for Archie, the couple's son.

"I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second," Meghan wrote, describing how she felt a sharp cramp after picking up Archie from his crib, and dropped to the floor with him in her arms, humming a lullaby to keep them both calm.

Meghan described how she and her husband were both in tears as she lay in a hospital bed hours later.

"Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few," she wrote.

"In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage. Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning."

The intimate details shared in the article are strikingly at odds with the usual policy of senior members of the British royal family, who reveal almost nothing about their personal lives.

Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, has never discussed her private life in any media article or interview in her 68-year reign.

However, there is intense global media interest in the senior royals, especially when it comes to family matters such as the birth of children.

Harry's older brother Prince William and his wife Kate appeared in front of TV camera crews and photographers outside the London hospital where Kate gave birth to her three children shortly after each birth, each time with their newborn baby.

Despite the media frenzy, however, William and Kate have revealed almost nothing of substance about their home life.

"MOTHER, FEMINIST, ADVOCATE"

A source close to Harry said the Duke had discussed the article with the royal family beforehand.

Meghan and Harry married in May 2018 in a glittering ceremony televised around the world, but the period after their wedding was tumultuous, with the couple falling out publicly with some British media and opening up about their struggles.

They stepped back from royal duties and moved to the United States earlier this year to try and forge a new role for themselves outside the constraints of life in Britain's strictly codified royal bubble.

The byline on the New York Times article was "Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex", and she was described as "a mother, feminist and advocate".

Meghan wrote that 2020 had brought many people to breaking points, and called on people to put aside political differences and other divisions and show some care for each other.

"So this Thanksgiving, as we plan for a holiday unlike any before — many of us separated from our loved ones, alone, sick, scared, divided and perhaps struggling to find something, anything, to be grateful for — let us commit to asking others, 'Are you OK?'," she wrote.

"As much as we may disagree, as physically distanced as we may be, the truth is that we are more connected than ever because of all we have individually and collectively endured this year."

It may be a break with royal reserve but it is typical of Hollywood where no publicity is bad publicity.

Spot on.

Everything will be about her career from now on.

In the future, expect "news" to be made by her every few months.

She won't be out of the limelight very long no matter what her marital status will be or what her relations with the British royal family are like.

The whole point of her talking about this, is she has been out of the spotlight for a few weeks, back in it now, she is very happy, on the front pages again.

A miscarriage is  a very personal private matter not to be splashed all over the media.

Sir, I always appreciate your commends a lot as a great read. But on this one, I beg to differ: Your opinion stigmatises any woman and family going through this. I think it is a traumatic event, comparable to torture. You have done nothing wrong, you lose what is dearest to you and you feel alone and ashamed, maybe guilty. Everyone has a right to deal with such a trauma on its own. Some may prefer to be silent, some may need to talk about it. It is a very private and sensitive matter and there is no right or wrong, just personal decision.

However, I truly believe that talking about it helps other affected woman and families. Let them know, that they are NOT alone and that it was NOT their fault. Assure them, that unfortunately it is part of our life and that it can happen to anyone.

She is NOT a British royal, she is an American woman who married a British royal. Therefore she cannot 'break royal reserve' because there's nothing royal about her. She gave up any titles the queen bestowed upon her (duchess) when she left.

Actually.... An American could never be a princess because they don't have any royalty. To be a princess, you must have royal blood. Something Megan does not have. Your source was an American news network that glossed over her real title... she was never Princess Megan, her official title was; Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales. She is formally known as The Duchess of Sussex because that dukedom was one of the titles that the Queen gave to Prince Harry on the morning of their wedding. She no longer holds the title HRH now that she is not a working on behalf of the royal family anymore.

But we also found out that we would not call her Princess Meghan, because of rules that apply to Royal titles, which have evolved since the Norman Conquest.

Sons and daughters born 'in the Blood Royal' may become princes and princesses that carry their own names, but the wives chosen by those princes do not.

So, I do believe she IS a British Royal.

She’s not even British. She doesn’t even have British citizenship yet! doubtful that she ever will considering she lives in the USA now.

Harry and Megan couldn’t trademark Sussex royal because they aren’t royal anymore - they dropped the HRH.

It’s a tad foolish to argue with a Brit about our royal family. There are centuries worth of traditions that Americans don’t understand.

I believe she was given a royal title and she still holds that title.  That makes her Royal.

I can understand why you would be confused, British royalty and nobility sound the same. Basically your not royalty unless you have royal blood. Commoners can marry into the family and hold royal titles. But if you walk away from that family and give up the HRH (his/her royal highness) then you are no longer royalty. Harry will always be royal because he IS a prince - he was born one

a really interesting and controversial story would be to look up princess Diana
