New Year drink driving crackdown: Slogan to change - drunks to stick their fingers in their nose

Thailand's DPM and health minister spoke to the press after a meeting to decide on the course of action regarding drink driving at New Year and other alcohol related matters.

Top of the list was a change in the slogan from "Drunk don't drive" to "Drink don't drive -  drive don't drink".

Anutin Charvirakul also said that a lack of equipment and these Covid-19 times would mean more sobriety tests such as getting potential drunks to stick their fingers in their nose.

The New Year crackdown would center on no sales to underage people and drink driving, he said.

He wanted campaigns to focus on less accidents, less death, less injury and not just be about improving on last year but doing the very best.

The campaign slogan for this year will change from "Mao Mai Khap" (drunk don't drive) to "Deum mai khap - khap mai deum" (drink don't drive - drive don't drink).

Anutin explained that the old slogan implied that people could have a bit of a drink and still drive. He wanted people not to drink at all if they were driving.

Health service personnel during the time of Covid-19 were more likely to assess drinking by doing sobriety tests because there was a lack of equipment at clinics. These would include how people walked and getting drunks to stick their fingers up their nostrils.

Anutin also confirmed that the total alcohol ban on sales and purchases online would come in on December 7th.

Previously only advertisers and those selling fake alcohol could be prosecuted.

Now the ban will be total.

We had a pretty serious drink driving problem in Ireland in the 60s, 70s and probably early 80s (as I'm sure many other countries had). Only through strict, on the spot breathalyzer tests, the issuance of hefty fines coupled with points and/or a loss or the driver's licence did the authorities get the problem pretty much under control. Although you'll always find a few chancers, the majority of people refrain from drinking and driving nowadays - it has simply become too expensive, not to mention inconvenient and embarrassing to lose a licence.

If the authorities here are even remotely serious about tackling this problem, then they must crack down on offenders. Not just once or twice "for show", but day in, day out. Take them to the washers. Compound their vehicles on the spot. Issue hefty fines. Blacklist repeat offenders. The possibilities are endless.

Too many innocent lives lost on the roads and sweet xxxx all is being done about it.

It's a lot better than the signs they had in Isaan a few years ago, saying that you should drive slowly if you're drunk!

And he seriously believe that change of a slogan will make any difference on drunk driving and traffic accidents? Pathetic! Then again, didn't  expect much more from this clown.

I support the concept  of fingers  up nose for those  caught driving drunk !  With a  small addition of a spot  of super glue  on the middle digit of both hand  just prior to  shovin it  up there !

Must have been known for quite a while as I have seen many practicing with their finger  up their nose even whilst driving !

Shouldn't be difficult .. as digging one out is a bit of a national pastime ..

Not that it'll make a difference .. we'll revisit the subject after the hol's when they are counting the dead score ..

One the companies I worked for in uk would add having a driving licence as part of your contract. If anyone lost their licence it was taken as a breach of contract. To my knowledge it never happened but I often wondered, but never asked, if it was legal for them to do that.

So, having beer, wine, or spirits delivered to one's door, to consume at home, is outlawed. Yes, that will help reduce drink/driving.

Perfectly legal if the job required driving, especially if driving company vehicles as drunk driving convinctions would affect their insurance costs once the offender got his license back.

You only have to look at this inadequate man to realise the problems are far beyond his ability to comprehend let alone solve.

Just shows that Thais are incapable of touching the tip of their nose with the tip of their forefinger and should not be allowed to drive at all. Add it to the driving test instead of depth perception!

The alcohol ban should help promote the A nut in production and sale of medicinal cannabis ????

if i was a drinker
i would be very concerned about this
it could have a much greater impact, should some other regulations come into affect later on down the road
i dont drink myself, but if i did,

i would be stocking up on at least a years supply of something cheap, just in case.

The average Thai  " Driver " cannot possibly use his Fingers to stick them up his Nose.

He is too busy flicking them at the Drink Drive Laws and the Enforcement of them.

I'm still not understanding why they are banning on-line booze buying. There can't be any link to it and drunk driving, the country doesn't have the data collecting ability to make that linkage. Taxes are being paid on it so I don't see it hurting government income. It's weird, but then again, so is the mid afternoon ban on buying alcohol in shops to help "stop school children drinking", or some such idea.

Just another TIT example I suppose.

It's to stop underage people getting access to alcoholic drinks. Stopping online sales would completely eliminate this problem as no shopkeeper would ever sell booze to someone without ID. ????

Of course! I should have got that immediately. And so the sublime plan become clear!

Thank madmitch, I can sleep easier at night knowing that the powers that be have everything under control.

The slogan should read... "drink & drive get 6 months in the pokey".

Cause an accident get one year..

Injure someone get 2 years...

Kill someone it's a manslaughter charge.

Would that be stick your fingers up your nose with mask on or off? :coffee1:

up at the sight of a rare policeman. A Nut in (Government) should be made aware that Speed Kills (maybe thro' drink or mental incapacity.) Curb the speedsters and you'll half the deaths.  A police force would help.
