Cabinet gives green light to new 120kph speed limit

Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting approved a Transport Ministry draft for new speed limits on Thai roads.

The draft ministerial regulation raises the speed limit on highways from 90 kilometres per hour to 120kph – but only for cars.

A limit of 90kph has been set for trucks weighing more than 2.2 tonnes and buses with room for more than 15 passengers. Minivans and buses with capacity for 7-15 passengers are limited to 100kph. A 65kph limit applies to cars towing another vehicle, small four-wheelers, and three-wheelers.

Meanwhile motorcycles have an 80kph speed limit, though big bikes of 35kW or more have a 100kph ceiling.

School buses are limited to 80kph.

The speed limits will apply on national and rural highways of four lanes separated by a barrier and without U-turn points.

The draft regulation also sets a minimum speed for the fast lane of highways of 100kph, aimed at easing traffic congestion and helping the transport sector.

The proposal will now be submitted to the Council of State for legal examination.

Yea, though I drive though the valley of death, I shall fear no (or little), evil, as I am in a Volvo. I pray for everyone else of course.

I think I need to go into the undertaker business and rent out refrigerated caskets.  Looks like the investment will pay off nicely.  Have not found anything that says it is a Thai only job.

They were already doing 120kph. So this makes it legal....

Even on non-highways, I see quite a number of big trucks exceeding the speed limit.

Half were doing 120kph the others 60kph.  What could possibly be the outcome.  Well looks like they have given the Vehicle accident death posters something to really whinge about now.  Should be good for at least 1000 posts me thinks.

So Expressways outside Greater Bangkok and The Motorway. The Motorway already has posted 120 limit. Everything else has U turns!

What were the bike limits before on a 90 kph highway?  90?

Instead of raising the speed limit what about slipping a few patrol cars on the highways to fine people ( and a hefty fine at that ) who start using the hard shoulder when traffic gets busy or to jump ahead at traffic lights.

While your at it remove that “ able to overtake on the left “ ruling , tired of seeing the dangerous antics of drivers zig zagging on Highway 32  !!

Talking of Highway 32 , about a month ago a couple of signs similar to these:

Appeared on the southbound side just above Ayutthaya but nothing painted on the actual road !!

Come on Thailand, these devices are there to educate the drivers about what a safe driving distance should look like, right now they are probably causing accidents as drivers search Google on their phones to figure the signs out !!

Slap a bit of paint on the road and put a few safety videos at peek time viewing, it’s not rocket science !!

Rant over ????

plenty of reefers around Laem Chabang

Driving on Rama 2 yesterday you would think they were  practicing  the new speed limits now.

Well this is one way to close the gap between the posted speed limit and the actual speed many drive at. Soon everyone will be legally driving at the speed limit.

The blind leading the blind.

A good way to achieve the stated goal of -50% in traffic deaths.

OMG this is so ridiculous, can't believe what I read ...

Nice to see them dropping the limit ????

Translated:

No one will care about U-turn points therefore Thais will consider all national and rural highways to have a new maximum speed of 120 kph which will translate to 150+ kph for anyone with a new-model HiSo car which any Thai who has a pulse will be able to buy on credit.  That will introduce a new level of carnage to Thai roads that will be beyond description.
Thais simply do not have adequate driving skills to travel at those speeds.  It will be a combination of excess speed coupled with asinine driving habits that will lead to slaughter:  Fools driving at speeds beyond their ability to handle meeting other fools driving like idiots at extremely slow speeds.  Even people who are driving safely will be in the slaughter-zone now as those vehicles travelling at really excessive speeds will start wiping out everything around them in a cascade effect.
Hopefully the HiSos passing these deadly laws will be some of the first to earn Darwin Awards.  What a stupid bunch of morons.

A posted speed of 90 means 120+ to those who believe they are God's gift to Thailand and HiSo special people.
Now?
A posted speed of 120 means 150+ to those who believe they are God's gift to Thailand and HiSo special people as well as professional car racers.

Thai's don't take any notice of the current speed limits now, so why think by changing the limits they are going to abide by the new limits... Crazy people.

One can only assume they have seen how speeding has killed so many on the roads that they now plan a new expansion of population control.
