BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has issued a recommendation for villagers and visitors to the north and northeastern regions, concerning what to do during the winter season, in addition to COVID-19 measures which are still active.

The Department of Disease Control’s (DDC) Director General Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, has issued recommendations for persons living in or visiting cold climate areas of the country this winter season, particularly the north and northeastern regions, which many people plan to visit this holiday season.

Among the recommendations; children, elders, persons with medical conditions, and persons with disabilities should be well protected by winter clothes which are regularly cleaned. Persons who are looking for or are using second hand winter clothes should disinfect the clothes first by soaking them in disinfectant or boiling water, to prevent themselves from contracting skin diseases.

The department is recommending against the consumption of any alcoholic drinks in a cold climate, while persons taking certain medications such as sedatives or seizure medications should be cautious of any irregularities in their body as these drugs can cause their body temperature to drop.

Members of the public are advised to practice hygiene measures to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases common in the winter season such as flu, as well as COVID-19, by covering their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, always wearing a face mask, especially when showing flu-like symptoms, frequently cleaning their hands after touching any objects, and by taking leave from work or school whenever they feel ill.

Villagers in the northern and northeastern region, as well as people visiting the mountains in these regions, are advised to check the cleanliness of their accommodation, as cold weather coupled with high humidity can cause fungi to grow indoors easily.

The DDC is recommending every person be mindful of their own health and the health of their family members, especially people at higher risks of disease, and to seek medical attention quickly should they show any symptoms. Further health information can be acquired by calling the DDC’s 1422 hotline.
