Restrictions On Bringing Cash In?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to transfer in from the UK to Kasikorn bank about 20,000 US$

I have been told that certain restrictions apply - (no more details)

Or..are we free to transfer what we wish to a Thai bank?

Thanks

JB

Nope, you can bring in as much cash as you can. No problem at all, taking it all out again is something else. There are restrictions on tranferring money out of the country. Welcome to Thailand!

Make sure that the Thai bank shows that the funds originated from abroad.

Ask the bank for the exchange document showing where the funds came from and how much.

Sometimes they can be a little dumb, but say you need it for

Immigration (Khor Muang).

My friend wants to bring 30,000$ into Thailand from Europe and deposit it in his bank, i told him it would be no problem, am i right?

As long as it is an overseas bank to Thai bank transfer. ( as opposed to a caseful of cash )

Is bringing cash in Illegal?

More than $10,000 has to be declared upon entry. Somewhere on thaivisa.com may have the immigration form you must fill out when you pass through immigration. A carton of smokes a bottle of booze and a billion lire or something like that.

Is bringing cash in Illegal?

No, as long as you spend it. If any problems, I can help you. :o

More serious, here an extract from the customs rules:

V Currencies

Inbound Passengers: Inbound passengers are allowed to bring in unlimited amount of foreign and Thai currencies.

Outbound passengers: Unlimited amount of foreign currencies are permitted to carry out of Thailand. However, the amount of Baht 50,000 or more in Thai currency must be reported on departure, except those traveling to Lao PDR., Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam are allowed to take out Thai currency not exceeding 500,000 Baht.

In practice, if you bring in more in Thai Baht, you better declare it and will get a receipt which allows you to carry it out again. This, however, is talking about Thai Baht, only. At BKK airport, there is a small room, after immigration but before passing through customs to handle this. I wonder, however, where the rule of

$ 10,000 comes from. I heard it before, but above seems to contradict this.

There used to be a sign up about the 10,000USD, have not seen it lately, the law must have Changed. Thanks for the Link Axel, it seems you can bring in as much as you like, and take out as much as you like ( foreign currencies), without declaring anything.

No problem Begs.

I still would be careful with carrying too much cash, get's stolen easily.

Now Thailand might not be, yet, too much up to date. But arrive in Europe, let's say Switzerland or Germany, with a bigger amount in cash. You will have half the country's financial department after you, checking for money laundering and/or tax-evasion.
