Pork price to keep rising: CPF

The price of pork will continue to rise next year, said Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) Chief Executive Officer Prasit Boondoungprasert.

He explained that in the past few years there have been outbreaks of swine diseases in Asia, such as the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and African Swine Fever (ASF), for which there are still no preventive vaccines.

“This has affected swine farmers in several countries, such as China and Vietnam, and resulted in pork shortage in the global market,” he said.

“Many countries switched to importing pork from Thailand, which has caused the price of pork to keep rising. This trend will continue next year.”

Prasit also said it could take 2-3 years before pork producers in the region restore their production levels to that of the period before the ASF and PRRS outbreaks.

“By that time pork may no longer be a basic commodity,” he pointed out.

“Farmers who rush into raising a new batch of pigs might suffer a loss if they do not employ strict biosafety standards to protect their swine from the outbreaks,” Prasit said.

“This is why CPF has invested millions of baht in research and development to improve swine breeds to be more resilient to diseases, and design an efficient farm management system that is eco-friendly and at acceptable costs,” he said.

“The ability to protect pigs from diseases and have efficient cost management will be the key factors of success for the swine raising industry in the next few years,” he added.

In Thailand nearly all food prices are rising. Usual cause, demand down...prices up - to make up for the shortfall in revenue.

Of course it does, now that CPF owns the whole "food chain"

These problems also rise when there is no competition in the retail market !

How about supplying Thai citizens with Thai pork first. But there's more money to be made for the billionaire company if it's sold overseas and that's all that matters.

Snouts in the trough.

Thats a Joke, right? Is he not keeping up with world and local news? An Executive of CP?

Let us not only have an oligopoly on retail grocers, but let's control pork products and prices from the farmers?

Here it comes .....

We order pork from the butcher before it gets to the market and sold to China. My wife rings the pork lady and she hasn't got it then she rings her supplier. We usually get it delivered to the door the next morning.

I must get her to order me 2kg of belly pork to make into honey and mustard bacon and another 2kg to turn into massaman curry to take to my mates place for Xmas.

Sounds like a plan as opposed to a prediction.

So expect a pork breeding farm at the corner of every street in the next 6 months, then a price cratering because of oversupply, and pork farmers asking for financial support from the government, because the price of pork is so low.

I agree but the flaw in your argument is China isn't overseas.

become vegetarian and send CPF to blood hell, i don't really care, stopped eating dead bodies long ago.

This morning the normal pork was around 147 thb/kg and sliced belly pork was 179 thb/kg. Both were no skin or bone.
