CBCB
Hi all My wife is booked for a cesarean very early January. At the last check up we were told she has staph showing from a swab of her vagina. We were informed the hospital wants to take the baby immediately after birth to do some tests and if they find signs of infection they want to place the baby into ICU for antibiotic treatment over a 7 day period. This hospital does have a reputation of putting profit first. My wife is devastated as she had problems with her first son who spent 2 months in ICU in a small hospital in Issan. I have tried google but can't find anything similar to what they propose. Does anyone have any experience with anything like this? Thanks C
Sheryl
While it is true that mothers with staph colonization may pass it on to their newborn, it does not usually cause clinical infection in the baby. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22189535/ https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/129/5/e1252 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20670229/ I really do not understand this "take the baby away for tests". Normally all they would need is a blood sample and maybe a nasal swab, both readily obtained in the delivery room, no need to take the baby anywhere. And unless the baby is septic (i.e. has staph in the blood which is very unlikely) no need for IV antibiotics. So yes, it sounds odd. Why are you choosing to deliver at a hospital known for prioritizing profits? That is inviting trouble IMO. I would suggest getting her records and going elsewhere. Where in Thailand are you? CBCB
Hi Sheryl Thanks very much for your prompt reply. I am near Pattaya. We booked our usual hospital for our first ultrasounds etc but when we turned up to the first appointment the Doctor had left for the day, we made a follow up for the next day but I called to confirm before leaving for our appointment and once again the Doctor had already left. We then went to our current hospital. My wife and I are generally happy with the service there, but this just struck me as being strange.
Sheryl
In Pattaya area, for private hospital I would recommend either Memorial or Phyathai Sri Racha. For the later, you can get a recommendation for OB from Gavin Wadell <[email protected]> tel 089 7500293
