British PM Johnson's father applying for French citizenship

PARIS (Reuters) - The father of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday he was in the process of applying for a French passport to maintain his ties with the European Union after Brexit.

Stanley Johnson, a former member of the European Parliament who voted Remain in Britain's 2016 referendum, told RTL radio he wanted to become a French citizen because of strong family links to France.

"If I understand it correctly, I am French. My mother was born in France, her mother was totally French as was her grandfather. So for me it is about reclaiming what I already have. And that makes me very happy," said the 80-year-old Johnson, who was speaking in French.

"I will always be a European, that's for sure. One cannot tell the British people: you are not Europeans. Having a tie with the European Union is important," he added.

His son Boris was the public face of the Leave campaign in the 2016 referendum and says Britain can "prosper mightily" as a fully sovereign nation outside what he sees as an overly bureaucratic EU.

But on Wednesday the prime minister sounded a more concilatory note as parliament approved a new trade deal with the EU, saying: "This is not the end of Britain as a European country. We are in many ways the quintessential European civilisation... and we will continue to be that."

The United Kingdom officially leaves the EU's orbit on Thursday night, after an often strained 48-year liaison with the European project.

He knows little England is going down the drain. What irony it was his son who gave it the final push.

Father and son have different opinions, no surprise there nor is it very meaningful IMO. But it is funny.

The words "rat" and ""sinking ship" spring to mind. I'm half Irish, and I must admit getting an Irish passport has crossed my mind, just for the visa free travel thing. In fact, going back in time, when I was as fit as <deleted>, when it was a toss up between the Royal Marines and the Foreign Legion, that guarantee of French citizenship was pretty tempting; unfortunately life, in the sense of a woman, intervened, and I went a totally different course.

The EU suits small European countries, allowing them to 'punch above their weight' and large European countries all of which have been led into catastrophes for themselves and their neighbours in the not too distant past. We on the other hand are unique in being a large European country with a 1000 years of (relatively) good governance so have no need for the political straitjacket the EU now imposes.

Now for more pressing matters, will all the European players in the EPL now have to apply for Work Permits?  Will some of the lesser EU players not qualify for a WP?

Did he get an American SS number? That would obligate him to pay US taxes to the IRS. Fork it over, pal.

Leads me to suspect that Boris is a "Russian asset."  Papa wants to be a French citizen.  France has always had a close relationship with Russia.  Boris is not exactly an Anglo-American name.

Come to think of it, there are a few apparent connections between our Boris and Boris Godunov, who began his political career in the court of Ivan the Terrible.

If only the Brits could "impeach" their leaders.....

I'm getting a Thai passport next week and it's tempting to burn my British one.

Why, imo no point at all in burning your bridges.

My British Passport is on the way, will be fine for the next 20 years for my needs, not headline news is it, people do what they feel the need to do

Maybe he knows about some insider information from his son that we are not privy too ?

Like somebody said  don't burn your bridges .... but in your case  advisable to go for the Irish one .... and keep the British as third choice .....

That's funny .... they are a third country now ....????.... at least for E.U. and maybe for the Irish republic  ( ? )   OMG !.... it becomes complicated ....????

What would be the point in doing that ?

You could still get a new one to replace the burnt one .

His Great Grandfather is Ali Kemal who is Turkish, which would also make him 1/8 Turk

if I'm not mistaken.

How is that a "betrayal" ?

Boris Johnsons Dad is already French (as his Mother was French) and he has business interests/connections there and he was just making it easier for himself to go to France
