Get set for more long holidays in 2021 and more spending!

 

 

Thailand is expected to lose about 5.85 billion baht in anticipated revenue during the New Year holidays due to the new outbreak of Covid-19. However, the government has come up with yet another stimulus campaign by offering a series of long weekends next year in a bid to stimulate local economies.

 

The Thai Cabinet has decided to add eight holidays to the 2021 calendar including an extra day for Songkran (Thai New Year) on Monday April 12. With the Songkran festival running from April 12-15 and the weekend prior to the start of the break, that makes the holiday almost a week long.  For the first time, the government has declared September 24 or “Mahidol Day” a national holiday in remembrance of the Prince of Songkhla – the father of King Rama IX.  And the Thai-Chinese will also see Chinese New Year (February 12) become a national holiday for the first time.

 

 

Adding the extra holidays is an effort to promote domestic tourism which has been severely affected, and stimulate aneconomy that has been badly battered by the pandemic. Before new Covid-19 infections started to spread in December, the tourism sector expected to see a slight improvement from local tourists during the New Year holidays. But many residents planning to take a break in the provinces have cancelled their plans due to the new outbreak.

Think that speaks volumes for the direction the country is heading !

Where will the money come from with unemployment at an all time high. Oh thats right silly me, from the government and the government workers on holiday. Sure as hell not from other people whose livelihoods have been affected by the shutdowns and now new imposed lockdowns.  

This really only benefits cities within driving distance of Bangkok.  More remote locations, like Samui, Phuket, etc, won't really benefit from this.  A bit, but not much.

 

No fun here in Pattaya as the traffic is ridiculous.

Just more debt and higher potential for the virus to spread.

You are right. I have been in Lanta for a week and apart from 2 nights 31-2, it has been dead with no sign of local tourists. 

Despite the effect in Covid-19 infection areas, K-Research predicts the Thai tourism outlook to gradually recover at the end of the first quarter in 2021, given that the coronavirus outbreak could be contained within one month.

Not a chance, the real numbers haven't surfaced yet after all the New Year's travel. 

If they announced the days you go to work it would be a shorter list. More holidays is not the way to go. The country and its people need to work.

It may also stimulate the number of road deaths so Thailand can reclaim the #1 spot.

If non-working holidays boost the economy, that's really great news.  Let's make every day a holiday, sit back, and watch the economy sky-rocket.

Most of Chiang Mai schools aren't re-opening today due to panic over visitors over new year & returning Chiang Mai folk from the beaches.  These holidays are a great help, NOT!

But let's be honest, there was very few people affected by the economic situation for travelling home for new year, situation normal.

 

In my experience they all always seem to find a few extra baht for holidays, always....

Can't see any of this happening.....new variant covid ripping through the country....... massive unemployment (apart from the illegal, make me even more money, immigrants)......provincial lockdowns........further restrictions on foreigners from abroad.....and only enough vaccine for one million hi-sos.........cloud cuckoo land.

Before looking at more 'Long Holidays' i think they will be looking at more 'Long Lockdowns', driving ever more business's into closure and more people below the poverty line.  Forget spending and start saving !

The majority of Civil Servants in this country are on one big holiday; go to any Public Building and watch them doing as little as possible all day !

They are thick! So their answer to stimulate the economy is to work less, produce less, therefore earn less... This is madness and it shows the mentality of those in charge.

Not really thought through but certainly not going to happen for while till this pesky hiccup has been sorted

same as the UK.  Civil Servants there can have a whole career and never achieve anything, except a nice fat pension at the  end of it.  I  suspect that most Civil Servants the world over are just 'drop outs' that have a life time job, where nothing much is expected of them.   Embassy and Diplomatic  staff come from the same mould.  Motto for them all, don't make waves, keep things simple, don't change anything, don't show initiative, go home early.

Given the lockdown and the travel ban isn't this news irrelevant.

Given the latest news regarding the spread of Covid 19, I wouldn't bank on being able to travel anywhere on the February/April dates.
