BANGKOK: As the Thai government races to secure more COVID-19 vaccines from various sources, a group of medical scientists is preparing for the first clinical trial of a home-grown cure they are developing to fight the pandemic.

In April, they expect to inject 72 volunteers aged between 18 and 75 with ChulaCov19 – a vaccine that is being developed by the Medicine Faculty of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok to fight the infectious disease.

“We’ll inject our first volunteer in April, probably around the end of the month. Within two months, we should know the results of Phase 1, which will show what appropriate dosages will be,” said Kiat Ruxrungtham, professor of medicine and director of Chulalongkorn University’s vaccine research centre – Chula VRC.

How ludicrous.  Race to create, then trials, then ....well maybe ready in about 2 years.  Yet there are already vaccines on the market that they have ordered.  Are they trying to cancel their deals in order to save money and of course put the money back in the coffers, oops I meant their pockets and the owner of the company who will be producing said vaccine.  Have to show the world how great they are instead of just saying Thank you.  Might as well launch the vaccine and submarines into space on the rockets they will be building to go to the moon.  Are these people that daft?

5 hours ago, internationalism said:

Out of some 130 vax already in phase 1-3 of trials, and some 10 vax already in emergency use, this vax doesnt have much chance.

They have said earlier that this bax will be 600b and that they dont have funds to start production. They have asked for 1mln donors for 600b each, wirh a promise of priority in que to jab.
The other vax are cheaper. Starting from $3 for astrazeneca.
with this speed of work their vax migh be ready for rhe 4th or later wave, and without chance for mass production

So in other words they're starting a Go Fund Me for the vaccine.  Amusing when a drunk busted up farang needs to start one to get a plane ticket home.  Not so much when it's for a vaccine.

Given the low numbers of vaccines so far ordered from UK & China, I imagine the Thai-invented one will be considered perfectly suitable for the remaining 50 or 60 million peasants in about 2 or 3 years time. No point in worrying about such people before then. Good government is about priorities.

"Eye of newt, and toe of frog,

Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,

Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble."

A friend who is well connected says that the new Thai vaccine for Covid-19 is based on extract of shrimp. Rumour is that it has microscopic amount of lemongrass and Thai chillies too. Shipments are expected to start in Samut Sakhon.

The need for the vaccine will not be going away.  Almost for sure it will become part of the annual Flu vaccines.  The one JNJ is making is meant to be able to be included with the normal annual flu vaccinations.
