Gangster wants new identity

BRUSSELS - Gangster and former state policeman Robert Beijer says he is willing to disclose details about the murder of Francis Zwarts 25 years ago. He will only talk however if the justice ministry agrees to give him a new identity.

Beijer was linked in the past with the Nivelles Gang, responsible for 28 deaths and a series of robberies and attacks in the first half of the 1980s.

Beijer is in Thailand and wants to return to Belgium. In exchange for a new identity he will tell authorities where to find Zwarts' body.

The gangster wants to negotiate with Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx (Socialist Party PS) but she has refused so far.

Beijer is threatening to go to the press and reveal the location of Zwarts' body if Onkelinx continues to refuse to make any concessions.

Robert Beijer

From Wikipedia

Robert Beijer (born 1952) is a former gendarme with the Belgian Rijkswacht. He was convicted in 1995 for taking part in two murders.

Robert Beijer was born in Brussels. He started working for the Rijkswacht in 1970, and would eventually join the Bijzondere Opsporings Brigade (BOB), an investigative branch of the Rijkswacht, the former military police of Belgium. In that time the BOB experimented with new investigative methods used already by their American counterparts. Together with Madani Bouhouche, Beijer would develop illegal activities while on duty.

In 1983, Beijer would start the Agence de Recherches et d'Informations with Bouhouche, a private detective bureau. Beijer and Bouhouche would become suspects in the 1986 murder case of Juan Mendez, a Fabrique Nationale de Herstal engineer. After a diamond dealer was killed in Antwerp in 1989, Beijer and Bouhouche were sought again, and Beijer would be arrested again, after an exile period in Paraguay and Thailand.

A 1995 court would convict Beijer for his part in a 1982 security guard murder and the aforementiond diamond dealer murder. He would be released in 1999, after which he went to live in Thailand.

Beijer was at various times brought into relation with the Nijvel gang. He was never a suspect in this case though, although Beijer himself has claimed at various times to have more information, which he might eventually put to writing in a book.

Do I understand this properly?....he offers to tell where the body is,if given a new identity....then threatens to tell the press where the body is hidden,if not given a new identity!

I just finished living in Belgium for 4 years

Those 28 murders - robberies where they executed people lying on the ground are still played out in the papers every so often

If I remember correctly the robbers were bumping each other off too - this must be the body in the woods!

A Belgian member will know the story better

Anyhow Beyer's position is stupid. You have to give me a new identity or I don't speak to you,I speak to the medias :o

But he was convicted of two other murders described above, yes?

Have you ever seen his picture? Surprisingly given all the google info on him, there's no photo. Is this him?

I'm unsure because it mentions other names and I've not found any online translater for Belgian to English.

btw, do you know of any? The AltaVista Babel Fish French to English doesn't work well and neither does the German to English. It's not the first time I've wanted something translated.

Have you ever read anything about where in Thailand he settled?

I wonder who the lucky person is that has him as a neighbor.... :o

Quite right, but anyhow I was of the perhaps naive belief, that Thailand would not let a convicted murdere stay here legally. :D

Who cares anyway ?

Naka.

Who died and made you god naka?

A lot of people do care , because these incidents almost paralyzed and destableized one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Would like to see the responsible scum in a Thai prison.

Hi there Sriracha john.

Allow me to clarify something about Belgium :

There are 3 official language groups in Belgium i.e.

Flemish who speak dutch

Walloons who speak french

The people from the Eupen/Malmedy (german border) region who speak german.

So there is no Belgian language per se. Quite confusing isn't it?

Anyway we do make the best beer in the world. :D :D :D

Cheers

The article says he went to prison for "his part" in the murders, and he only served 4 years.

I think we need a little more information before condemning him to Thai prison.

His request/demands make him sound like a real dim bulb though.

Although I can't believe he's that stupid.....(I could be wrong)

Their could be another explanation for his statement about going to the media.

Perhaps the location of the body implicates someone in power?

It seems implied that the Justice Minister should be concerned about the body's location......perhaps someone close to her is implicated?

What ever you think of this rather odd chappi it would appear that he has done his "bird" in Belgium and assuming not mis behaving in Thailand would have no reason to be deported.

If every X Con was Pulled and Booted then Patti would be like a ghost town.. :o ....

maybe not a bad idea ...but...then......wot would the ha bt song tao bus drivers then do to earn an "Honest "living... :D

This guy is evidently intellectually challenged (that is not a slur on Belgians - I have known

many Belgians who are smarter than you , dear reader).

He is also a convicted felon. He was lucky , therefore , to have procured a visa.

He MUST be a quality tourist.

He seems to have done his time for his crime/s and has not been accused of any

further offence/s therefore why should he be eligible for prison in Thailand ?

Also , as Rinrada somewhat incoherently points out , hounding all intellectually

challenged ex-criminals out of Pattaya would probably cripple the local economy.

I remember reading about the Brabant murders at the time, which were pretty shocking. Gang would rob supermarkets and shoot the shoppers, men, women, and children. In a country the size and population of Belgium it is simply unbelievable that those crimes have not been solved, esp. with so many involved. Can any Belgian readers shed more light on this?

I am not Belgium but know a lot of this case.

A gang of robbers showed up at several supermarkets and took a loot of let's say 1000 dollar a time.

Peanuts. Cash was not their main objective so to speak.

In doing so they shot 28 people 'randomly', without any need to do so. Pop, pop, pop.

Among the victims were some people suspected to be involved in dark crimes such as international weapon trade, sex crimes and murdering politicians in Belgium. This created the myth which is still holding ground today.

The gang of Nijvel came and disappeared just like that. No motive!

It destableized the country completely, even CIA involvement was suspected.

The people were so afraid in Belgium it became a national stigma.

Belgium had a population of about 12/13 million people, so imagine the impact it had.

Thank you for that information... :o

One can learn something new everyday on TV... :bah:

Previously, it was explained to me that there was French Belgian and German Belgian languages used in Belgium... which were both different than French and German.

and yes, it is confusing. :bah:

Are you aware of any website that do online translations of whatever language they are using in that newslink I cited earlier or Belgian websites in general?

For example, if he is here based on his age:

Requirements: The applicant for a retirement visa:

1. Must be aged 50 years or more on the date of submitting the application.

2. Must not be prohibited from entering Thailand under the Immigration Act (1979).

3. Has no criminal record in Thailand and the country of his/her nationality or residence

I would presume that murder is one of the disqualifying criminal acts constituting a "record."

That is what boggles the mind. There has to be some political/military link in order for those crimes to remain unsolved for so long.

I'm from Belgium.

the article you want to translate is in Dutch.

"de bende van Nijvel" obviously had a hidden agenda, they pretended to rob supermarkets, but failed to make any real profit, this while many clues were pointing to the Rijkswacht, the military police, stuff like weapons they used etc.

in general it's believed that they were paid by some obscure elite aristocrats, linked to the royal family9all French speaking of course), to scare the nation and so show the need to give more power to the military police, that didn't work, the military police doesn't exist anymore ...

Thank you for that information.

Going back to that weblink I posted earlier as well as a few other links on him and using the convenient service of

www.freetranslation.com

for dutch to english, it IS a photo of Robert Beijer (obviously taken several years back as he is currently 54 years old).

bejeir.jpg

Interesting to find another article describing his arrest in Bangkok in 2001 upon a request by the Belgian authorities related to charges of murder, armed robbery, and involvement in illegal weapons trade.

Unfortunately the full article is only open to paid subscriber service.

Yes...since he apparently is here currently, it sure sounds like this guy is a real colorful character to add to the tapestry that makes up life in Thailand.

Well, let's speak about facts (not ideas coming out of everybody's imagination):

Beijer has never been convicted for "blood" crimes. His name has been linked to a lot of crimes by journalists but the Belgium court did not linked him to any criminal gang. Those are fact that can be veryfied by the Belgian police and in his "certificat de bonne vie et moeurs"

Beijer has not asked for a new identity but to change his name back to his mother's name has his adoption father died many years ago and no one has that name anymore. He was willing clarify some of the trails that policemen are still investigating but yes, as the Belgium election approach, the justice minister does not want to react.

A Flemish television "VTM" spoke about Beijer's demand without having sopke to him previously and without knowing what he really wanted. In reaction to that 2 articles will come out in Belgium magazine due this week.

Thank you for your additional information.

As for not ever "being convicted of blood crimes," are you saying the wiki article that states he was convicted of 2 murders in the OP is inaccurate? Or just that he was never convicted of other gang-related crimes?

Dear John,

Yes, he has never been convicted for ANY blood crimes. He has been convicted for illegal weapon possession, and other crimes like paper theft from a city hall but never for murder.

His name is still used in many cases by journalist in search of selling articles but the facts that I writte above are true and those can be verified.

As for Wikipedia, let me remind you that it is a free content encyclopedia, and that articles can be added and modified by anybody and anyone so if tomorrow I write in that encyclopedia that water is red, you should not believe it because it is writen in there.

Best regards,

and sorry for my poor English

On the contrary, your English skills are fine and I understand what you are saying... :o

I thank you for clarifying that part of his background. I also understand about how wiki works and I would hope you'd make the effort to try and append the wiki write-up.
