One dead, three ill after eating worms found on palm tree

Featured Replies

One man died and another three fell ill after eating worms they had foraged from a decaying palm tree in their village’s paddy fields in Chamroeun commune of Preah Vihear province’s Sangkum Thmei district.

District police chief Chuon Moeun said all four are residents of the commune’s Sen Kong village.

Moeun told The Post that on the morning of January 24, Mao Lean, 28, and his three neighbours – Poy Vin, 28; Dim Sophea, 15; and Prach Pisey, 9 – had used an axe to cut down a decaying palm tree in the middle of the paddy to catch worms to eat.

Sad someone died. Very strange story though, as those worms are not toxic.

Maybe the people got poisoned from the oil they used to cook them, or other food they are with the worms?

Perhaps the coconut tree was dying because it was poisoned with weed killer or someone has sprayed it with toxic insecticide to try to kill the worms and save it?

Anyways perhaps stick to a fried egg or noodles next time!

Wow. I always advocate avoiding worms. Good general culinary policy. It was likely something else. Never heard of anyone dying from ingesting worms, though they sure can play havoc with the digestive tract, when contracted from some of the aged or very funky Issan (10,000 year old this or that) food here.

I never gave it much thought but now I shan't eat any worms from coconut trees again. Not until I give some to my cat first anyway. I've found that A1 Steaksauce helps the bland flavor.

Helpful post for sure.

Excuse my ignorance, but were these youngsters eating worms due to having no money for proper food due to covid / lockdowns?

Snacks are not usually healthy stuff, but it seems this particular one was not just unhealthy but also contaminated.

call me old fashioned but I'll stick with bacon and eggs
