The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday convicted two former CNRP activists to three years in prison for insulting the King and the Queen Mother on Facebook last year. The term of their sentence shall be implemented only for one year in prison each, however, as the remaining two years shall be suspended due to old age and illness.

Judge Kol Kampoul identified them as Kong Bunheang, 66, and Hang Seng, 65, both living in Battambang province’s Sangke district. “The court orders both of them to pay about $1,500 each as a fine,” he said.

He added that both were charged with “Insulting the King” under Article 437 of the Criminal Code. They were arrested on October 18 last year. According to the court’s document, during the floods last year, Bunheang and Seng criticised the King and the Queen mother on Facebook, saying “they are useless”.
