Big cats dwindling from Cambodia’s forests

Indochinese leopards and tigers seem to have disappeared from their natural habitat in Cambodia, a conservationist told Khmer Times yesterday. “There is no scientific evidence since the 2010s to give us hope as conservationists to believe that Indochinese leopards and tigers still survive,” said the Cambodian conservationist who asked not to be named.

He said the last record of a tiger in Cambodia was made in November 2007 at Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri province and any other information about them is just rumours. “A tiger’s roars were heard by a group of rangers in Oddar Meanchey province in early 2020, but it could have been their dream because there is no evidence to prove it. There are not even any pictures from the hundreds of camera traps that have been deployed in the forest,” he said.

Big cats like Indochinese leopards and tigers are no longer found in the Cardamom Mountains, making the clouded leopard now the biggest wildcat around, according to Wildlife Alliance Cambodia. Some clouded leopards’ paw prints were found by officials of Wildlife Alliance in February.
