Prime Minister Hun Sen mulls on limited nationwide travel ban

In a recent voice message to Interior Minister Sar Kheng, Prime Minister Hun Sen is reportedly considering a nationwide travel ban to limit people’s movement and curb the spread of COVID-19 linked to the February 20 incident. According to the message dated Thursday, the Premier asked Kheng to lead an urgent meeting to discuss a travel bans between districts and provinces all over the country from today until March 16.

“If we don’t do that, our workers will keep travelling without listening to us,” he said. “We need this urgent measure… Otherwise, the entire country will be ruined”

Mr Hun Sen went on to instruct Kheng and Deputy Prime Minister Bin Chhin, the minister in charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, to draw up a draft of the order for him to sign. The travel ban is unlikely to include transportation of goods and emergency services.
