As you want it for shade, I presume that they will be in full sun. As a very amateur gardener here in Phuket, one lesson that took me ages to learn, lots of dead plants and quite a bit of money, is that you should choose plants that are common in Phuket. If you want a climber for shade that is virtually impossible to kill, then I would go for the Taro vine. Very common and very cheap.
