The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has revealed the show is bringing back controversial character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon and has "ambitious" plans for his return.

The character has been at the centre of controversy ever since the 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu addressed how the shopkeeper was racially stereotyped.

Original voice actor, Hank Azaria, confirmed he would step down from voicing the Kwik-E-Mart clerk last year, calling it "the right thing to do".

I'm sure there are a number of Indian actors who could/would do Apu's voice if asked. Like the guy from Deadpool for example (Karan Soni who plays the cab driver/wannabe hitman Dopinder).

Then of course, there'd still be people who would be upset for one reason or another. I've worked with a lot of Indians when I was in Afghanistan and I can tell you that a lot of them sound very much like Apu (except that Apu's English skills were a lot better).

Nothing was a problem until someone figured out the guy wasn't an Indian. Then all of a sudden that was offensive. No matter what you do lately, everything is offensive to someone. And while we should collectively be mindful of the feelings of others and act accordingly, it is my humble opinion that this has gone too far.
