Remember 3D TV's and curved TV's around 5 years ago. ????

???? I still have my 4K LG 3D TV and I enjoy it almost every evening. Does a really great job to render 2D into 3D.

It really depends if you change the programs you used over those 9 years. Not many PC's can keep up with the programs that long. I usually like to use newer programs. Then you can forge about (comfortably) using a PC that long.

Which is why I abandoned PCs in favour of a laptop. I consider a laptop a throwaway item. Never paid anywhere near the price for a laptop as I did for a decent PC. I did hit a major disadvantage for laptops over PCs earlier this week though. powered up in the morning and it was stuck in a startup loop. HP logo and spinning wheel. Tried everything to no avail. Dashed round to my preferred repair shop behind Tukcom and left it with them. Was warned that it may require a reinstall. Went back a couple of hours later, all done. The manager showed me a photo of the inside of my laptop. Literally full to the brim with cigarette ash. They had given it a good clean and it was as good as new. Never had that problem with a PC.

OP, I get your point about spend more and get a better product, better performance and/or reliability etc ,but the same principle also applies the washing machines, lawnmowers or space shuttles. Most people will buy any product balancing out price v performance v reliability.

Its all relative, at a certain price point double the price doesn't equate to double the performance/reliability.

With PCs and technology in general, the higher price often reflects the development cycle of the technology. you are paying for new features, the next technology etc, the reliability remains the same with the price increase.

Sure that is why i am not going for the top of the line just a bit below that. But you see cheapest so often. While just a lil bit more on a power supply or on a better motherboard can influence PC life a lot.

I blow out my PC once in a while.. but smoking and ash can get in a PC just like into a laptop. Just that your close to the laptop when smoking. But still.. ash in a laptop.. wonder how close you were.

As you said yourself biggest restrictions to the life of a PC are software upgrades.

1 has a battery build in , other 1 just shuts down ( unless you buy UPS ) . The stable power supply both have build in , when removing the plug or dropping voltages ( this might happen in Thailand ) , 1 still keeps working and the other 1 just says no .

My old Dell tough-book has no battery my workbench PC has a UPS. Stable supply ??

They certainly are software is getting bigger and bigger. But those cheap ass power supplies have failed me quite often. After having that happen a few times i went for quality. The sound is less too. But certain things like good capacitors on a motherboard make a world of difference too.

Yes its usually the software, i generally upgrade my PC a bit until its time for a new mainboard.

FYI: cool laptops have two batteries — embedded + "usual" external battery as in usual laptops — and allow hot swapping the external battery without shutting the system down. I have one of these toys and bought 2 extra batteries, total weight of laptop with extra batteries is below 2 KG and total runtime is close to 24 hours.

Can your UPS do that and how much does PC+UPS weight?

I have a super hot Bridgette B nudie as my screen saver. I took the laptop  into the shop because it would not boot up. They hit a few keys, and - lo and behold - Bridgette appeared at the same time as a female employee walked by. Everyone started laughing. Man, the Thais can be really cool sometimes.

Sorry, anyone using a huge heavy box dependant on stable power supply has no credibility.

Desktop PCs are the thing of the past.

clearly, it's so funny that some people use them and do not consider themselves as people from the past with the same ideas as their grand parents.

I didn't buy a <deleted> oversized computer since almost 20 years.

I don't work - had 30+ years of that - but my "office" is my real living room. Sometimes not much room left for actual living...682604298_TooMuchTech800.jpg.136d73a372156ffd9d5ed85c21800b16.jpg

Are you serious? Looks like a computer store. For what do you need so many???

I took the photo for my niece in England who wanted to know how many computers I had.

I was working on only one - the second from the right laptop. Can't even remember why or who it was for now. The extreme right laptop is now in the kitchen for streaming news from the Internet.

The little yellow one third from the right is a Samsung Netbook. It's in a cupboard now, but still runs Windows 10 OK.

The one to its left is a Samsung S6 tablet which I don't use that much. The screen above it is from my 9 year old XP machine.

The big screen on the left is for my Windows 10 desktop and the small screen to the left of it is an Asus Ultrabook - used mostly for Skypeing to England and Canada.

Like I said, "toys for the boys".

I have a nine year old self built i5 PC, all mid range components, hard drives replaced with SSDs, 2x 28 4K Samsungs, 3BB 1Gb/s internet.. Regular W10 updates, and Glary Utilities tells me when any of my programs/apps are out of date. No problems ever. Luckily I have a room specifically for my PC as I do a lot of music production on it via Cakewalk and hence some 'noise' for the Mrs. In my lounge, an i5 NUC, again Windows 10 Pro, into a Samsung 55 inch telly, connected via CAT 6 cable, Arcam amp, Paradigm 2 speakers. Brilliant

All media is kept on One Drive where I have 1TB storage, I can decide which files are kept locally.

I will stay in the car analogy. You cant expect a sports car and a truck or a normal personal car all do the same thing. Same goes for computers. For some a laptop is best for others a pc and again others prefer a tablet.

But that does not mean you always need to go for the cheapest version of what you want. Sometimes a bit more money makes a big difference.

Just a preference i guess.. and I would also not drive the cheapest car. I prefer things with quality. But i use my computer far more then my car.

I use my pickup as much and as often as my PC - daily! Unfortunately, the dämn pickup won't die. It's 18 years old and still looks and drives like new. Dämn you, Toyota!

Any Pc will stream movies (4k) and music, and let you browse the internet. The bottleneck is your internet speed, not your pc's processor power. So  there's no need to pay any more, unless you want to play the most recent games.

Most retired people don't play PC games, so no need to spend excess money.

My TV is the 65" PC screen, my PC is about 6 years old, SSD, win7, all media on a NAS.

My next upgrade (if I live long enough) will be a 75" (LG) screen @30kbht.

PS. i don't buy any  software, and I don't see any ads.

I bought my PC for £40. Put in an SSD costing £25 within and put in a graphics card from an old PC. It dates from 2009.

Not really sensible to suggest that people should spend more on a PC than they need or want.

Three years? That is a joke. All of the devices currently in use by myself are between eleven and fourteen years old.

Laptop that I am using now cost 21,000 baht fourteen years ago. It still does what I need.

Obviously you don't have the same requirements i have, everyone is different i prefer to spend money on things i like and use a lot. My dad always taught me buy good tools they will make your work easier. I can tell you the money i spend on my PC has paid itself back in time saved (business wise for my work) and for gaming you can never keep a PC the same for 3 years.

So it depends what you do with it. I do reuse parts too. I doubt i will change graphics cards soon now a 3080 from nvidia in the computer that would last more then few years.

Sorry, anyone using windows 7 has no credibility. It was a good operating system, but there are no more security updates /fixes. It has reached the end of it's useful life.

There are updates until 2023; you just have to know how to obtain them.

It was in answer to "why-does-everyone-wants-the-cheapest-pc?"

The answer is because that is often all they need. Of course some people buy ill advised carp, but that is another subject.

I buy good value items; not the cheapest items. Bought an 'as new' Lenovo laptop usually costing £500, for £200. Extended the warranty to a three year on-site warranty for £50.
