Try alcoholic hand gel on the keys, (and on your hands!   LOL )

no no no, most alcohol products , like the blue alcohol you can get in Pharmacies, are up to 30% water.  I ruined one computer cleaning it with such a product,.  get the proper stuff from a computer retailer.

Possum was talking about cleaning the keys, not immersing the whole thing in some sort of cleaner. Alcohol gel may be 30% water, but so are the 'proper' cleaning products. Just don't let it soak in. I'll bet Apple Cider Vinegar would do a good job.

I'm shaking my head. I've passed on my experience, up to the OP.

In my experience, a micro fibre cloth with a bit of window cleaner or alcohol works just as well.

Ask in a computer shop for computer cleaner.

I used that in the past and it worked fine.

If you have the skills then it would be best to remove the keyboard from the notebook. On some notebooks that is easy (maybe check on YouTube).

Then you can clean it without worrying that the cleaning fluid flows into the notebook.

If you have the skills, do not use so much cleaning material, be it gel, alcohol, washing up liquid, that it can run into the keyboard. A damp cloth and a bit of elbow grease will suffice.

A dampened cotton bud will do the edges of the keys.

With my MS desktop keyboard I removed all the keys and soaked them in soapy water. For me that was the "easier" solution. ????

Just holding it upside down and lightly shaking it can jog loose a surprising amount of small debris.  I also periodically swipe mine with my vacuum using small upholstery brush attachment.  For gunk and grease on the keys, I follow another posters advice and use cotton buds and a touch of alcohol, but not enough to drip into the works.

Thanks for your help guys, will take it to computer shop on Monday.

After all this good advice, you are going to let a shop do something you can so easily do yourself? It is only cleaning the keys!

I use the window cleaner (the brand name in the US is Windex, but the much cheaper no-name is just as well, it's primarily ammonia).  Also good for the mouse, and the surface you mouse around on. I'll give it a touch of alcohol next time.

Gotta be careful with what you mix with ammonia.
