webfact
Picture: Daily News Daily News quoted a deputy at the Airports Authority of Thailand as saying that despite the Covid pandemic the development of a new runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok was 6% complete. Contractors NWR had been clearing the area for Runway 3 and installing fencing on both the "airside and landside". It is expected to be ready for service in August 2023, said Kirati Kitmanawat. Capacity for flights will increase from the present 68 per hour to 94 per hour. And capacity for passengers will increase from 60 million per year to 90 million at Bangkok's main airport hub. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2021-04-29 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Popular Post WaveHunter
Wow, planning for runway expansion during the present state of this pandemic makes as much sense as all the new luxury hi-rise condos I see going up all over the region. Talk about deluded expectations and misplaced priorities! I wonder what planet these planners are living on anyway LOL! Apparently it's the land of wishful thinking. RobMuir
90 million passengers annually expected Misleading headline, the link merely said that they can "accommodate 90 million passengers" not that they are "expected". On honest mistake or is it designed to upset the TAT bashers? It is a very good airport.

jaiyen
In any other country they would say that construction has just begun, but in Thailand it is 6% finished ! Won't be long before they say it is 98% finished !

DogNo1
How many tourists will now be confident of their safety in Thailand if a new pandemic were to occur? Being in Thailand at that time could be a death sentence for foreigners.

Must have got a loony from T.A.T. to come up with them figures. As predicted. Looks like whoever wrote the English version of this came up with the "expected" figures. The link that this is copied from clearly says "can accommodate', not "expected". They do domestic and most people fly in and out so the numbers don't seem unreasonable. They built this because they were already running at near full capacity pre covid. Nearly 40 million foreign tourists, X two in and out gives 80 already. Plus all the domestic. They recently expanded Don Muang also.

Searat7
Putting aside the pandemic for a moment the third runway is probably the first expansion that should have been planned (before new built terminal building) since Thailand airport opened in 2006. One reason besides capacity is that the runways have needed frequent maintenance and with a third runway you can be sure that at least 2 of them can always be operative.

grin
Did no one else read the title the same way I did? I.e. the plans are only 6% complete, not the runway.
