Kasikorn Research Centre reported that the third wave of COVID-19 in Thailand will have a huge effect on the restaurant business, which is still recovering from last year’s closures.

The latest COVID-19 restrictions, imposed on deep-red zone provinces, namely Bangkok, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan, prohibit dining in the restaurants and restrict opening hours, effective from tomorrow.

Full-service restaurants will be affected the most, especially those located in shopping centres and at tourist locations. It is predicted that such businesses will generate revenues of 139-144 billion baht, a 12% drop in the worst case.

Things that could help, like allowing deliveries until midnight or so, have been pointlessly blocked. Why stop deliveries at 9pm? I guess the answer lies in the fact the new *czar* is an admitted social vacuum who doesn't like to go out or do much else. Anyone not back in the barracks by 7pm would be deemed a social misfit and trouble.

The important word is "may".  It is annoying to read such narrow conclusion. Ok, so  people will not go to restaurant at late hours. This does not mean that they will not eat. They will go more for takeout and delivery. On the contrary, if experience from other countries is same, they will eat more and most likely better and there will be surge in delivery. Demand for supplies will increase. The point is that while restaurant eat in business will decrease, other business will increase.

Why do they need to deliver to midnight? 9PM is more than reasonable. How many people do you think are ordering and eating at that  time of night. Instead they will eat earlier. Look at the experience of other countries who used limited hours. Know what happened? They crushed transmission rate even when there were no vaccines.  The restriction is temporary measure is minimal disruption.

I would think the loss will be greater than that as many people won't go out or order Grab/Food Panda etc because they fear the Virus being brought to them with the food; heard it being said today by Thai Neighbours.    Large numbers of Folks will be cooking a lot more at home.

Sounds like they'll be losing vermilions then .. best get T A to expand the donut range to take up the slack as there's plenty of dough in donuts ..

Or get the newly appointed God of all things to get his finger out and vaccines in, they should all get together and vent their frustrations in public...  shame them into action, not empty talk & promises!

IMHO I think this is cobblers. There will be massive inflation in food and other commodities so sales in local currencies will look very good since they will be compared to a lower than normal base.
