Government measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 infections across Bangkok and other five red-zoned provinces will likely have a negative impact on the tourism sector, analysts said Friday, adding that the downside risk was limited.

The return of a 14-day mandatory quarantine for all oversea arrivals regardless of their vaccination status from May will put a downward pressure on Thai tourism businesses, said Napat Vorajanyavong, an analyst at KGI Securities.

“We expect the fundamental impact to be limited since Thai tourism is now tied to the domestic market,” the analyst noted.

Has there truly been any real tourism outside of the slim amount of domestic tourism since the country shut down from Covid.

Then the crux of reality is at the end of the story.

So analyze away.  Tourism in its prior incarnation is done and dusted I would think for a great while.

Just need a few more public holidays or work 1 day a week and travel 6 campaign.

The US has just stopped inbound travel from India.  Also a big factor for the world is the fact that India produces 70% of all vaccines for the world.  That will definitely stop countries from meeting the vaccination projections as well.

Good example of a feedback loop.

I really like headlines that are using the conditional to state the obvious.

Would I take a holiday in Thailand now? Definitely not.

I could still drive to Koh Chang, but the idea of having to wear a mask and force my kids to do so during a long drive makes this plain impossible for anyone who isn't a masochist.

There are amazingly good sea food restaurants, but who could enjoy the fresh products of the sea without a good bottle of wine? Gotta be joking. Anyway Salak Peth, my little paradise if off limit now.

Walking on the beach at sunset or swimming under the Klong Phu with a mask? Laughable.

I am not saying that any of those restrictions aren't justified, but why talk about Thai tourism in 2021?

The only thing the government should be doing right now is to help operators to mothball for the forthcoming year, at least.

"could be hit" ha ha. Kiss goodbye to tourists this year.

There has been a negative impact on tourism for some considerable time, but yet we get another different report due to the extended mandatory quarantine.

40 million tourists is "limited"?

Unbelievable.

From what I am seeing based on unemployment and economic activity it appears to be an economic depression.  90% plus down in Pattaya I bet.

There is no tourism.

It is not possible to have a negative impact on an already dead sector...it will just remain dead...

At least 90% down, and those businesses still clinging on since March 2020 hoping for a reprieve will have been put in further jeopardy with this latest lockdown. Pattaya survives on tourism and that is completely gone now, and unlikely to return for another 12 to 18 months. It will knock on and affect all other businesses. Not a trickle down, this is a proper waterfall.

Global economic depression is guaranteed and as Thailand relies heavily on exports and tourism it is bound to be felt here.

I came back 2 months ago did qurrantine "awful food" have sorted my affairs here, now leaving will get a phizer jab in 2 wks and now that ireland and many parts of UK and europe are opening there is more choice hope vietnam, cambodia or the philipines can open good for a winter break.

Done with the lies here wont come back unless they are begging that means no AQL, know  another doing exactly same.

Me thinks the badly managed covid has finally caught them out and with no vac rollout they maybe go into next year before any tourists could think about returning.

Pattaya reminds me of a city in the Philipines, looks dirty, badly maintained and deserted really shocked at it deteration in 1 year

thoughts of turning it into a place for rich like Miami are now what i see pie in the sky

Tourism could be hit by re-tightening of travel restrictions, experts warn

I don't think you need to be an expert to come to this conclusion!

The plus side to all this destruction of tourism and the closing of hotels is that when Thailand does re-open, due to the lessening of the number of hotels they will be more % fuller and these numbers will be shouted to the rafters by the TAT

Don't worry. They will legalise "Airbnb" for the Ch....  billions of tourists.

Right!

And we all know what comes (came) after a global economic depression.

That will be felt here too...

Tourism "could be hit"? What tourism are they talking about? There is none.

And now they require a 14 day quarantine for everyone, including vaccinated people?

Now, I'm all for quarantine if you're not vaccinated, but if you are? Really?

As an example, I'm so glad I'm getting the hell out of this stupid country in 10 days and I'll be in the USA for at least a month. If they don't lighten these restrictions and at least go back to the 7 day period I will stay in the USA until they do. And I live here!!

Now if you don't live here do you really think anyone is going to come here on a vacation, so they can sit in a hotel room for 14 days?

If you're vaccinated you shouldn't have any quarantine. That's the only way this country will get their tourism back. Otherwise it will be dead and so will Thailand.

For the first time since I got here I'm seriously thinking about moving back to America.

I don't really like it there, but I'm just sick and tired of the stupidity here.

I'm sure TAT will soon announce that its forecast of foreign tourist arrivals has just been revised upwards, lol.

Aw, don't be so negative!

Here's an outsiders view looking in.

1.There is no tourism to have an impact on anything by any re-tightening.

2. The slow roll out is nobody to blame except Prayut and Co.

3.There was no political sense in allowing people to travel during Songkran.

4.By not allowing private institutions and organizations to ' source ' their own vaccines has led to the damage to the economy because hardly anybody is vaccinated.

5. The lousy options of vaccines and at present only Sinovac, in any quantities ( least popular vaccine choice ) is directly down to the choices made by the government themselves.

6. Unlike nearly every other country, Thailand has no back up plan in the event of problems with AZ roll out. Now, they say they will allow private organizations but they then have to go through the time consuming registration and approval process.

7. I do not want to start using the pathetic cliches of ' brown envelopes ' it's predictable nonsense, however, it is very easy to mess the public around when all the bloated, fat bellied generals sit there pontificating when they are already vaccinated.

8. You and your government Prayut are to blame now for deaths due to your arrogance and incompetence. The ' blame '  starts and stops at your door.

Too much back slapping due to the slow number of cases in the pandemic last year led to laziness, tardiness and complete complacency.

You should be ashamed but no doubt you will blame others and ' face ' it out.

Don’t look now, but western currencies sinking, as the mighty Baht keeps rising.  Perhaps all this vaccine talk is just a smokescreen...
