BANGKOK (NNT) - Myanmar has imposed a ban on imports of five Thai drinking products sent by land from Thailand, but will allow imports of these products by sea.

 

Starting from Saturday, the ban applies to soft drinks, fruit juices, ready-to-drink coffee, condensed sweetened milk and fresh milk sent by land. However, these products can be exported via ship to Myanmar, which means higher export costs for Thai businesses.

 

Myanmar’s Trade Department sent a letter concerning the ban to Myawadee customs office, opposite Tak’s Mae Sot district via the local coordination committee. The reason for the ban is not clearly known.

 

The move comes after a substantial increase in drink exports to Myanmar earlier this year. According to the Commerce Ministry, the value of exports of drinks to Myanmar increased by 10% to 2 billion baht.

Another example of a sham ASEAN trade agreement.

Expect Thailand to retaliate as that seems to be it's best trade policy.

Perhaps they could crack down on the import of drugs from Myanmar, we all know that's where they come from.

I wouldn't export anything to those idiots.

Maybe this North Eastern trade route is being used to smuggle supplies in drinks cartons to the pro-democracy supporters and the ethnic militias fighting the murderous Burmese army???????

Could lead to a serious shortage of red Fanta to put outside the spirit houses!

Boo-hoo! With those products that popular in Myanmar, I'm sure, that Thai businesses will be able to add the extra costs to the sales price. Works in Thailand with all kinds of imported goods, too...

Jade trade, in 2014, was like 31 Billion USD and HALF of Myanmar's GDP.

 

Now?   The soldiers control it ALL.  

 

sanctions?   ok, but they won't work if there is a buyer for their jade.

People getting in a strop because they didn't get their brown envelope.

Something else to punish the people. Make the drinks more expensive for them. Won't affect the senior generals. They probably dine on the finest of comestibles.

And who buys most of it? Probably the friends just to the North! (Chinese love jade.)

 

Sanctions from China? Yeah, right!

There's a reason why dictatorships love to trade with China. (Both care just about $$, and nothing else.)
