BANGKOK (NNT) - The National Office of Buddhism will release a list of temples which are equipped to cremate those who die of COVID-19.

The office’s Director, Narong Song-arom, said the list is being prepared in response to the growing number of complaints about temples refusing to accept the bodies of COVID-19 victims, citing the lack of a closed-system crematoria, which are designed to contain the cremation chamber’s exhaust gases.

He explained that some temples are ill-equipped to take in COVID-19 victims, as disease-control protocols demand temples cremate the body within 24 hours of death, to keep infections out of communities.

Mr Narong said, once a death from COVID-19 has occurred, families must report it to their local public health office immediately. After that, the health office will contact the National Office of Buddhism’s provincial branch, which will then find temples that are capable of safely carrying out the cremation.

The temperature in an open fire pit will kill any viruses.
But?  Make it as complicated as possible.
Up next:  Which minister becomes the owner of the sole-sourced contract to provide licensed and authorized closed-system crematoriums to Thai institutions for the never-ending current and future pandemics that will for sure plague Thailand.

19 is sure a tricky little devil, isn't it? ????

That's reassuring.

in india bodies of covid patients are burned an mass on pyres in cities, they don't use crematoriums, probably it's their traditional way of disposing bodies.

so any crematorium at temples will do.

It just monks who believe in anything stupid and forbid using their temples.

The office should instruct them otherwise.

The last year my neighbour has died from a suspected covid. His body was put on a sealed bag and family was told not to open it - which, indeed, they open it before cremation.

so, clearly, there are no strong medical rules on cremation

It's not that cremation smoke settling in the surrounding area is going to spread COVID, but it's the handling of the body before the burning starts where a "low" chance exists.

Claim: Coronavirus could spread through the smoke and ashes during the last rites of a COVID-19 victim.

Fact Check: The claim is false. As per the guidance released by World Health Organisation (WHO) on handling COVID-19 victims' bodies, except in cases of hemorrhagic fevers (such as Ebola, Marburg) and cholera, dead bodies are generally not infectious. Only the lungs of patients with pandemic influenza, if handled improperly during an autopsy, can be infectious. Otherwise, cadavers do not transmit disease. The WHO further adds any body fluids leaking from orifices in the cadaver must be contained. There is no need to disinfect the body before transferring it to the mortuary area. People who have died from COVID-19 can be buried or cremated. However, WHO also mentioned that workers who routinely handle corpses may, however, risk contracting tuberculosis, bloodborne viruses (eg hepatitis B and C and HIV) and gastrointestinal infections (e.g. cholera, E. coli, hepatitis A, rotavirus diarrhoea, salmonellosis, shigellosis and typhoid/paratyphoid fevers).
