Well,  i mortgaged my future long time ago ,   coming to Thailand when it was a place of adventure.    Not too many, if any,  places one can do that now.    I was fortunate enough to find some ways to get by , living within my means.

Now,  well,  i still like Thailand over the US............. though i lived in N Calif  when it was cheap and sure liked the climate.    Financially stable ?   Here, yes.   There......... nope.  

But just in case,   what is a new AK 47 going for nowadays ?

Personally I can't agree with all the content some of which I found a little self congratulating.

But if Thailand works for you I'm pleased for you and those like you.

After 7 years here I couldn’t wait to get out and live somewhere that doesn't have dual standards or pricing, somewhere I'm not apprehensive about speaking or complaining to police. I'm confident of driving on all the roads knowing that the vast majority of other road users don't drive like lunatics, where there is virtually no litter blowing around the streets where I can confidently walk past a rubbish bin without fearing inhaling any toxic fumes.

I could go on but no point in labouring the obvious. 

I'm with you as I have only been back to the UK 4 times in 13 years and have no intention of ever leaving, unless I am escorted from the premises.

My life style and quality of life are immeasurably better than London and even though Thailand has it's foibles, it wins hands down for me.

I tried linguaphone, those Becker books, tapes, cd's and various online methods, hopeless i'm afraid. Mrs will tell me one thing today and I will have forgotten it tomorrow, tones I never could hear unless exaggerated.

I would find learning from my wife difficult to deadly... as she with me. Otherwise we get along fine. I also could not do Becker... there would be no way I could memorize the pages of transliteration guides w/upside down  e's etc...

 

we all learn differently and have different aptitudes in different subjects... it seems you have given it a fair shot.. on to something else, I guess. 

A good read Rooster, thanks.  I had a friend Bob who lived in the Pattaya area for some years, then in Hua Hin

with his wife Gif.  He was 70 and moved to Roi Et, where he had built a house. Sadly he died there a few years

after moving.    Bob had been in Thailand for over 25 to 30 years, and had only went back to England a few times

as he said, it was a bit depressing to see his old neighborhood had went from proper British folk, to all Arab Brits.

  So he felt it was more peaceful in Thailand, and the Winter especially was way better.

    My Thai relatives, give me lots of places to stay during my visits so living in Thailand is not necessary for me, but I do

still enjoy the visits.

On a more serious note, at this juncture, I think we no longer have to worry about Thailand becoming flooded with more ex-pats. Thank Prayuth, Anutin and Phiphat for that. I guess they are good for something productive!

There are plenty of good women in Western countries. But, they are alot harder to find, and a far smaller percentage of them are comfortable manifesting the dignity and beauty within their femininity. Not to mention the ridiculous height of the hurdles, to find one who is pretty, smart, not overweight, not overbearing, fun, intelligent, and not a warmongering type.

In my case city prices. But, when it comes to anything labor related, prices in the US are downright surreal. A friend of mine is having his pine tree trimmed. Quotes range from $1,500 to $3,000. Insanity. I just had my rear bumper area of my car re-painted here. 2,000 baht. In the US? $800 or so.

Alot. Most Thai people are not linguistically oriented. They have a very hard time understanding what a foreigner is trying to say, in Thai, if you do not get the pronunciation and tonal qualities just right. It is the imagination, and the creativity, that allows an ability to dance in circles around a problem, and the desire to understand, that truly differentiates most Latinos, from most Thais.

Noting also of course that the way it is used to write English is totally appealing and stupid.

 

What I meant is a very practical aspect of learning a new language. When you can read the alphabet, you can see a word spelled out, and it makes it far easier to grasp what you are trying to learn, and relate to the word or sentence. That is why most say if you really want to learn Thai, learn to read and write first. Right?

I second that emotion.    I try my best to present a balance of seriousness and humor, though it seems that as time goes by i lean more to humor.   So many subjects turn into absurd pi$$ing contests instead of an exchange of thoughts and opinions.

 

While so many here bemoan the Thai's supposed lack of desire/ability to discuss things in an intellectual manner that fits the westerners upbringing............. 

Many Thais are not impressed by the need foreigners seem to have to criticize so much and be "so serious".    

 

In a perfect world ,  all would possess a perfect balance .  Oh,  and everyone would have to agree on what that was , of course.   Food for thought and another idea for a thread here on TV  for which "facts, sources, idiots, and know it alls "  could come together.
