How Did the Honda LPGA Thailand 2021 Bubble Work?

Unfortunately, the Honda LPGA Thailand 2021, hosted at the Siam Country Club’s Old Course, was a closed event with no tickets sold and with no public spectators allowed.

However, it was an extremely exciting tournament, and showed the global TV audience how good the younger up and coming Thai players were.

In fact, there were shades of a younger Ariya back in 2013, on the 18th green when 18-year-old Atthaya Thitikul missed a 3 ft putt to hand the trophy to a waiting Ariya on the 72 hole. Ariya did the same and Inbee Park was waiting to lift the trophy.

With several Thais in contention including Patty Tavatanakit, normally you would expect the Thai golf fans to flock to the event in their thousands, however due to strict covid regulations, Ariya Jutanugarn eventually won and lifted the coveted trophy just to a massive TV audience.

So How Did the Event take Place?

The tournament had to be conducted under strict hygiene and safety measures to provide the utmost confidence to media, 72 female golfers, and all stakeholders, same as the HSBC Championship the week before in Singapore.

Further, the CCSA-compliant organizational quarantine (OQ) facility was established to help reassure the health and safety of the world-class golfers competing in the tournament.

During the competition, IMG the event organisers arranged for an inner bubble (Green Zone) which was restricted to just Players, Caddies, Officials, and Tournament Operations Personnel. An outer Bubble (Blue Zone) was for Sponsors, Members of the Media, and External Contractors.

Strict Protocols for the Inner Bubble

All inner bubble personnel were required to do a mandatory “PCR Swab Test” immediately after checking into the hotel.  A negative result was required before being fully accredited and given access to the tournament premises.

All personnel had to stay at the assigned hotel and competition venue only and were not allowed to go outside without explicit permission.

After doing the test, they were tagged with a “PCR Test” wristband. Once they have received their negative test results, their credentials were delivered to their room. However, they were required to stay isolated in their room until the next day.

Most of the players and staff stayed at the Avani hotel in Pattaya, which is an ASQ

registered hotel. There was no eating outside of their rooms and hygienic boxed food was delivered to them each day.

Each day they all took the official transportation provided by the tournament organizer, and they even limited the number of players on the putting green at one time.  It was always strictly mandatory to wear a face mask, except when drinking, eating, and playing.

Media Coverage

The media are not allowed to enter the golf course and photography, video shooting, and broadcasting was done in the assigned Media Area only, with strict social distancing measures enforced.

All golfer interviews were conducted via the ZOOM application, with no contact and personal or group interviews with golfers.

TV team in Singapore

The TV crews were covering the action live at the course, however the three commentors headed by Kate Burton, Tim Low and Suzann Hengk were actually working remotely from a studio in Singapore, not that you would know it.

201 and all the excitement was limited to watching the excellent TV coverage over the four days.

Hopefully, next year the fans will be allowed back to follow their favorite players and hopefully we can have another Thai player life to coved trophy.

That will be the New Normal of sports.
No more dirty commoners to deal with.

Why would you need to be on tiptoe? ????

I enjoyed it and the finale was arguably exciting to many golf fans

In the US they are already allowing back spectators on the PGA tour - last weekend for example.

The British Open in July is hoping to have also.........https://www.golfchannel.com/news/ra-planning-significant-number-fans-open-championship-royal-st-georges

Well try getting excited at the European tour at the moment. Maybe you do not enjoy drama on the course.

It was an exciting finish and good to see the Thai girls fighting it out. The disappointing aspect for me was when Attathaya missed the short putt on 18th giving victory to Arriya there was a big roar by the sparse spectors, not what you would expect, but unfortunately most Thai golfers show very little by way of courtesy.

Should have allowed fans. Would have gone for sure. Great tournament with exciting finish. Picked Ariya to be the winner. Her 63 final round was stellar. ????????????
