The Ministry of Agriculture on Friday denied issuing certificates for the export of ‘endangered species’ of  wood to Hong Kong or other countries. The ministry has also initiated an immediate investigation together with other relevant ministries, institutions and stakeholders on the recent seizure by the Hong Kong Customs Department of seven containers with $140,000 worth of wood that arrived from Cambodia between April 29 and May 5.

The haul was said to be the largest cache of protected wood the Customs Department had seized in the past five years. The ministry, in a statement, said that the wood seized in Hong Kong was exported illegally. “In the last five years, the ministry has never approved any endangered wood application to any company for export abroad or to Hong Kong,” it said.
